About the City

Berhampore is located approximately 200 km to the north of Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. It is the headquarter of Murshidabad district and situated at the bank of the river Bhagirathi. The institute is situated at the west side of Barrack Square, known as Square Field in the local parlance, where the mutiny of 1847 against the British rulers was initiated.

Berhampore was fortified in 1757 by the East India Company, after the Battle of Plassey in June 1757, and it continued as a cantonment until 1870. Karnasubarna, which is very near to Berhampore, has a history dating back to 600 AD. Many buildings from the late 1600s can still be seen. The cantonment was constituted as a municipality in 1876 and was the headquarters of Murshidabad district.

Baharampur is a famous place for tourists in West Bengal. It gets tourists' flow from locals as well as from foreigners, being the first headquarters of the East India Company  and having a long history enriched by the Nawabs of BengalSultans of BengalZamindar and other European colonial forces such as Dutch, Portuguese, English (British Raj) and French.

Berhampore is well connected with Kolkata by bus and train routes.

Bhagirathi Express and Lalgola Passenger leave Kolkata/Sealdah station to reach Berhampore Court station in about 4 hours time. The institute campus is about 1 km and ½ km away from the railway station and bus terminus, respectively.

The distance from Kolkata to Baharampur is approximately 174 Kms. By car, it takes roughly 2 hours 50 minutes to reach Baharampur from Kolkata. By train, the travelling time between Kolkata & Baharampur is roughly 4 hours. Take a look at the 3 routes available to reach Baharampur from Kolkata -

  • Kolkata to Baharampur Train: Start from Sealdah railway station, Kolkata. Take Bhagirathi Express(18.22) or Hazarduari Express(06.50) starting from sealdaha station or any passenger train going towards Lalgola. It is 186 km away from Kolkata and takes 3.5 to 4.5 h depending upon the train that you catch. you can also avail DhanaDhyanye Express(16:10) from kolkata station.

  • Kolkata to Baharampur Bus:  Get into any private or government bus from Dharmatala/ Esplanade(Kolkata) going to or via Berhampore.Volvo bus service is also available for Kolkata-Baharampur route.

  • Kolkata to Baharampur Taxi: You can take a car from Kolkata to Baharampur. It will take you around 2 hour 50 minutes to cover distance of 194.7 Km and reach Baharampur from Kolkata. The total amount for the journey will be approximately Rs. 4000.
