Phillips Eye & Surgery Center Display and Reception, April 25, 2013

This spring Hunterdon Central Regional High School Students have had an opportunity to showcase their photographic expertise along with painting by members of the Hunterdon Watercolor Society at the Phillips Eye & Surgery Center in Flemington. Dr. Paul Phillips and his wife, Dr. Ann Rockford-Phillips conceived the gallery last fall when the center opened on Minneakoning Road with the goal of presenting a revolving art show throughout the year for the public to enjoy. Every four months a new show is presented and all artists are Hunterdon County residents.

Wednesday, April 24th the Phillips' hosted an artist' reception for the student photographers and artists to debut the spring show. HCRS student photography will be on display through May 15th; watercolor display will run through the end of June. Dr. Phillips said "the artwork is beautiful and we're thrilled to have Hunterdon High School students join the show. It's something our patients and staff enjoy, but the gallery is open to the public and we hope people will stop in to take a look." The Gallery is open during normal business hours and all are welcome.

HWS Meeting April 1, 2013

Chris Carter demonstrated Creating Abstract Art. She present simple methods of creating abstract compositions as a foundation for exploring with watercolor.

Ms. Carter uses traditional watercolor techniques such as wet into wet and dry brush along with homemade tools to create her abstract compositions. Her work has been demonstrated in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the tristate area including the Open Juried NJ Watercolor Society and the National Association of Women Artists 123rd Annual Exhibit. Some of her recent work include a solo show titled Orbs at the Connexions Gallery, Easton PA and a permanent exhibit of figurative watercolors at the Bone and Joint Unit of St. Luke's Hospital, Bethlehem, PA.

HWS Members brought in their posters for the 2013 Shad Fest. Proceeds are used for art scholarships for local high school students.

Watercolor Workshop with Kass Freeman, March 20, 2013

The focus of this workshop was how to paint light using underpainting and complementary colors. We also learned about working with a limited palette to prevent mud in our paintings. There were lots of tips and tricks worked in as well.

HWS meeting, March 4, 2013

A live watercolor demonstration by Ron Lent, noted oil and watercolor artist, demonstrated his techniques for keeping paintings clean and transparent.

Mr. Lent says "Keep It Clean explores the natural properties of watercolor while using a predictable procedure to stay fresh, transparent and clean while attempting the difficult but rewarding effort of making fine art." Ron's commitment to traditional transparent watercolor has earned his paintings over 50 awards and medals in the last several years, including 15 from the Garden State Watercolor Society and 16 from the NJ Watercolor Society. In this period he was awarded 16 First Place and/or Best in Show honors.

Ron is a Signature Member of the American Society of Maritime Artists and has been published in the book Best of Watercolor III. He was also the founding member of the Hunterdon Watercolor Society so the group is very happy to welcome him as this month's demonstration artist/speaker.

HWS meeting, Feb 4, 2013

Suzanne Hunt, Princeton watercolorist, demonstrated her artistic techniques for capturing natures beauty. The focus and technique of the presentation was painting flowers as a still life. She worked from a live arrangement using a transparent watercolor approach.

Although Suzanne's specialty is flowers, her paintings cover a wide spectrum of subjects from Jersey shore scenes, woodland landscapes and familiar historical sites. Suzanne is a member of the Arts Council of Princeton, the Hammonton Arts Center, as well as the NJ Watercolor Society and Garden State Watercolor Society. Her paintings have been exhibited in Michigan, New York, New Jersey, and many are part of private collections from coast to coast and abroad. Suzanne has been consistently recognized for the skill and sensitivity so evident in her work which can be seen on her web site.
