December 20 2008 Gold at Auckland Champs

The weather was '4 seasons in one day' but a number of our athletes turned up to Mt Smart to compete in the Auckland Champs 1500m and 1 mile walk today. Congratulations to Michael Dawson who won gold in the 11year boys 1500m race with a PB of 5.07.12 and to Cherie Walpole who won gold in the 12 year girls 1500m race with a PB of 5.03.80.
Congratulations also to Daniel Sloan (13B) for 3rd in the U16 boys walk (in the wind & rain) with a time of 10.55.24 and Michael Reid (11B) who placed 4th in the same race with 13.52.68. Jessica Reid (13G) placed 4th in the U16 girls race with a time of 11.36.54. It is interesting to note that this year the walk was held as part of the senior events so races were gender split. All male walkers competed together and all female walkers together. This meant that all our walkers competed against former Commonwealth medalists at least twice their age and with proper track officials! See http://www.athletics.org.nz/AKL/Resource.aspx?ID=5028
Well done to Nathan McDougall & Matthew Dunbar who also competed.

3 January 2008 Coaching resources to be made available

A number of parents have requested 'coaching' or 'tips on technique' for certain events. Lack of coaching resources is an ongoing problem for many Auckland clubs with no current funding or training in Auckland. However, we are actively building a list of potential coaches and will keep you informed of opportunities to learn more about certain events as we are able to get help. We are also developing a folder which will have information available to parents to help children with technique. In the meantime - if you have information or know anyone who may be able to help our athletes improve their times and distances, please see one of the committee members.

4 of our athletes competed at Christchurch over the weekend and while no medals were taken away, Matthew Reid (8) came third in his division of discus to get a pennant, and PB's were broken. Each day was hot (38 degrees on Saturday) but QE2 is a great place to compete if you ever get the chance!
