4-2 Groundwater and surface water relationship

Groundwater and surface water relationship - Relation eau de surface - eau souterraine (soutien d'étiage, crues, qualité)
Abstracts can be downloaded below - les résumés peuvent être téléchargés ci-dessous

Surface water bodies are integral parts of groundwater flow systems. Groundwater interacts with surface water in almost all landscapes, and also in karst landscapes. Groundwater – surface water interaction issues are numerous: recharge – discharge processes, sustainability of river and spring base flow, (ground-)water quality, ecological aspects, human impacts, etc. However, these interactions in karst areas are at present still poorly understood. A better understanding of the principles of interactions between groundwater and surface water in karst areas is needed for effective management of water resources.

The scope of this session is to get insight into the complex interaction between groundwater and surface water in karst areas by a multidisciplinary approach.
