• 1974 to 1977: post-graduate correspondence course of Russian language and literature at the Pushkin Institute, Moscow
• 1977 to 1986: assistent lecturer at the Teacher Training College Dresden in the fields of history of education and comparative education;  1981 PhD and in 1986 habilitation (Dr. habil.)
  
• Since 1986: lecturer (assistent professor) at the Pädagogische Hochschule Magdeburg and (since 1993) at the Otto-von Guericke-University of Magdeburg respectively; since 1992 (and until retirement in 2008/09): Full Professor of Historic and Comparative Educational Studies at the University of Magdeburg (Saxony-Anhalt, Germany)
