GSC Workshops and Classes
We hold regular classes, discussion groups and workshops to help you make the most of your genealogy software,
search for your family history on the Internet,
make the best use of our extensive family history resources...
and many other topics which might be of interest.
Our workshops and classes cater for beginners and the more experienced researchers.
Generally the morning sessions are for beginners and the afternoon sessions will extend your knowledge!
All funds raised from our workshops go towards the costs of operating and funding our GSC Resource Centre
and the purchase of equipment and resources,to help you make the best use of your software and to provide quality scanners and printers to help you create your family stories.
GSC Workshops
Below are some of the topics covered to date. If you have a particular interest in a class or would like to suggest a new topic, please email or phone. Volunteer tutors and helpers welcome.
1.Internet searching - techniques and tips , including the use of various databases - which are the best?
You can download the notes for this class " Useful websites for Genealogy" . Hands on Classes using our Laptops for Learning computers will let you try out these sites in more detail.
2. FAMILY TREE BASICS - hands on class using your own laptop computer and family tree software to try out the features of various programs and to learn to make the best use of the features of the program.
3. GSC RESOURCES - making the best use of our multitude of resources.
This session will cover the basics of the many types of resources available at the centre.
GSC Library resources - a guide to some of our best resources and how to use them.
A definite must attend for this workshop - our resource centre adds about 100 new titles each month... update your knowledge of what can be researched and find out to make the best possible use of the resources.
A more detailed look at how to search on various databases , including Digger, Flickr, Archive CD Books, AIGS, and many more to retrieve family information.
4. Planning a family reunion, which will include ideas for successful family reunions of all sizes, including preparing reports and family trees from your genealogy software .
5. Scanning photos, negatives,slides and documents - how, where to and why.
Come and see the results you can achieve using our new EPSON V700 Perfection scanner... and learn how to scan for yourself.
6. Creating a web page for your family history
See Milli's web pages as an example ...a work in progress...
7. Scanning photos - the basics of archival scanning and storage, and organisation of photo collections.
Also some tips on repairing damage via digital copies of your original photos.
8. Creating books from your family tree software - some ideas on how to tell your family story .
9. Scrapbooking ideas for family history - or presenting your research.
10. Photo restoration, printing, scanning and storing your original photos safely.
11.Organising your research, storing and backing up files.
12. ROOTSMAGIC 3 workshop- A more detailed look at this versatile genealogy software and what you can create with it.

15. Basic family trees using Rootsmagic and other genealogy programs
16. Sources and fact fields and notes - how to manage them in your family history research - why you should be using them in your family tree software. Come along and find out how to source your information logically and some ideas on where to store all that information!
17.How to set up a computer filing system—the where and how of storing your files . We stress the importance of backing up your information and give you some tips on how to protect your files and your computer system.
18. Making cards and family tree gifts - some novel ideas for Xmas... and for special occasions.
19. Most useful resources for family research at GSC -a great introduction to our library and different ways to use resources to extend and confirm your research - lots of ideas - and some fantastic new resources.
20.Publishing and displaying family stories and trees—some ideas—Lots of ideas from our talented group of designers and scrapbookers - be inspired to create your own family story with a variety of programs or using scrapbooking techniques.
21. Scanning photographs –the things you should know to create quality photo scans, plus a look at what the new Book Scanner can do.
22. SOURCES AND FACTS FIELDS - why you should be using them in your family tree software. Come along and find out how to source your information logically and some ideas on where to store all that information!
23.Using family tree software for beginners - and anyone else who needs a refresher course!Focusing on Family Tree Maker, Rootsmagic and Legacy - bring along any questions or queries!
24.THE MASTER GENEALOGIST / FAMILY HISTORIAN AND ROOTS MAGIC - a new look at creating family trees with some different software and some comparisons
25. Storing treasured photos, organising paper files, scanning photos and backing up with digital cameras and CD or DVD.
26.Using PICASA and some photo ideas for genealogy - Picasa 3 is available as a free download from Google - come along and find out all the creative things you can do with Picasa to create family stories, organise your photos and create DVD's to watch on your TV.
