Military research

National Archives of Australia

https://www.naa.gov.au/

The National Library of Australia holds many digitized copies of military records which will give you a timeline of service for each serviceman or woman.

Records from 1914-1918 are already digitized and work is underway on the 1939-1945 war.

You can also request records of interest and check if there is a fee to digitise for other conflicts.

It is worthwhile to register online with the NAA and keep a track of your searches and records of interest.

Always use the HELP screen  on these sites for more details and tutorials on how to search these sites.

Use Record Search to locate people or places

The Name Search is very useful for military records

Australian War Memorial

https://www.awm.gov.au/

The Australian War Memorial has a library of photographs, diaries and memorabilia for all conflicts and all services.

There are many photographs taken during conflicts which might show groups in the field, photos of aircraft and crews, memorabilia and diaries.

You can search on name alone, but it is helpful to have the service number and regiment of your person before you search through the various sections of this site.

Use the search to find people, places and events

Trove

https://trove.nla.gov.au/

Trove is hosted by the National Library of Australia and provides quick access into their many collections - so do just search for your name of interest as an first option.

The Digitized Newspapers collection has the most results usually  and is very useful for local records of soldiers heading off to war and also for presentations when they returned from war.

There are detailed letters and descriptions written by serving soldiers which might provide detailed information for your family records.

Adopt a Digger

For records of Sunshine Coast diggers and nurses being collected for Adopt a Digger.

You can search for your family name and see what is recorded to date.

Perhaps you have information or photographs you could add to tell their story.

Work is ongoing to check and update this website.

There are some additional sections being added, so please check back to see what is new.
