UNB Fencing Club’s Jenny Zhu takes Bronze in Montreal

Seven UNB Fencing Club members took part in the annual Terre des Hommes Tournament in Montreal this weekend. Facing a tough crowd of national team members, UNB’s Jenny Zhu (age 14) took bronze in U20 Women’s Epee and 5th place in the Open category. In the Junior event, Jenny came 6th after the preliminary round matching her up against the 3rd place fencer, Justine Boudreau of Quebec City, for the elimination round. Controlling the action throughout most of the match, Jenny came out on top with close 11-10 victory. Moving on to the semi-finals, Jenny faced Ariane Léonard of Montreal. Having trouble figuring out the orthodox fencer from Montreal, Jenny fell behind, 13-3 by the end of the first period. After a few words from club-mate, Patrick Bradley, Jenny rallied in the second round, closing the gap substantially; unfortunately, it wasn’t enough and Jenny was defeated 8-15, finishing 3rd overall.

In Men’s Epee, club coach David Themens, achieved the club’s best result with a 17th place finish. Patrick Bradley, Mitchell Clark, and Garreth McGrath finished strong with 27th, 28th, and 29th place finishes, respectively.

The UNB club’s Sabreists, Raphaël Bradley and Cameron Haigh, were also in action this weekend competing in the Junior and Senior Sabre categories. This was the first opportunity for NB fencers to fence under the new and radically changed sabre rules. After strong performances, both fencers would fall just shy of medalling in the Junior event with 5th and 6th place finishes, respectively. They would also finish 7th and 8th, respectively, in the senior category.

After the Montreal tournament, half of the UNB team moved on to fence at the Governor General’s Challenge in Ottawa putting up strong performances. Results from that tournament can be found below:

David Themens: 12th in Senior Mixed Epee

Garreth McGrath: 15th in Senior Mixed Epee

Mitchell Clark: 17th in Senior Mixed Epee

Congratulations to all those that participated in these tournaments!
