Violeta Cone

1. What is your name, background and interest with training empathy?

I'm Violeta Cone, MA in Clinical and Counseling Psychology, PhD Candidate in Counseling Psychology. I'm from Bulgaria, a country in Southeastern Europe, but currently live in Illinois. Both my master's thesis and my PhD are focused on empathy. Currently I'm researching how parenting style affects empathy development in young adulthood.

I'm also a trained group facilitator and Psychodrama assistant director.

I'm strongly drawn to group work and group settings. My interest in empathy is connected to how the helping professionals and volunteers could develop and use empathy in their professional and personal lives, without getting depleted and burnt out. I have experience in health/social work and management.

2. What are your ideas for forming an International Empathy Trainers Association?

I'm not sure yet. I imagine it would be a diverse group of people, coming together to grow themselves, share ideas and possibly build networks for empathy training development. Probably there will be a need for a somewhat unified definition of empathy, ethical standards and some type of quality assurance.

3. What sort of support do you need from IETA?

I would love to deepen my own empathy training, I'm sure I have a lot to learn. I would also look into how I can be a trainer myself, what has worked for others and is there something we can do together.

4. How would you like to contribute of building the Association?

It is hard to tell before I have seen/heard the discussions. I could contribute time, share ideas and experience and other things as needed.

5. What questions do you have for others on the list?

I'd love to see their answers to these questions, as a start. :)

6. Will you be able to attend some planning and design meetings?
What dates and times are good for you?

I hope so. I'm not sure about my summer schedule yet.
