¿ Curcuma sp. ? : Attachments (1). 9 posts by 2 authors. Attached here is a photograph of Zingiberaceae member, probably species of Curcuma or may even be some Amomum, or altogether that I do not know. This I found in the vicinity of Kadri Temple, Mangalore. I am sitting with it since May 2007 !! Some fair idea: found it growing in shade of large tree cover among bed of moist decaying leaves; the time of year was approximately post few monsoon showers. They were plenty of them, though scattered far apart. Interesting to note is the way the flowers appear directly on the soil as if emerging from a namesake stem on the root. PS: Unfortunately, I have only this photograph ... book gives almost similar picture at page 362 as Curcuma species without mentioning the exact species. Flowers have some similarity with flowers of Curcuma longa (Haldi). Yes, I too have noticed that similarity; however I would like to know the exact species unless there are too many close and confusing ones. C. longa has relatively a taller inflorescence made up of several flowers, whereas this one is usually seen solitary or with hardly 2 - 3 flowers ( not sure if my expression is technically correct). Other than that one picture in Shrikant ji's FFOS, I am yet to come across any such illustration in other references, say the internet or other reference books. That makes me wonder more about this plant !! thanks for guiding me to http://www.gingersofindia.com/ I got the unidentified Curcuma to be C. karnatakensis by Dr. Sabu (I believe the owner of the site) himself. ... finally this one is Curcuma karnatakensis. I approached Dr. Mamiyil Sabu, owner of http://www.gingersofindia.com/; he helped identify it. 4 posts by 2 authors.
