American plant, largely naturalised in India, often grown as hedge plant.

A common tropical invasive, but also a very pretty garden plant much loved by butterflies.
Flowers are loved by many species of butterflies;
Noxious weed....;
It is one among the 100 worst weed species of the world. Here in Uttarakhand it has replaced natural vegetation so that the food chains are also disturbed in protected areas. There is hardly any enemy of this species in India;

Key from eFlora of Pakistan:
1Bracts ovate-acuminate. Infloresence, short, cylindrical to spicate. Flowers usually white or pinkish .... Lantana indica
+Bracts linear. Inflorescence umbellate. Flowers usually scarlet, yellow or mixed coloured ..... L.camara

GRIN gives two different taxa as below:
Lantana camara subsp. aculeata ((≡) Lantana aculeata L. (basionym)) and Lantana camara aggr. (Lantana camara L. aggr.)
Other references like eflora & India sources can be seen at Lantana
In view of these I have the feeling that our common Lantana weed must be Lantana camara subsp. aculeata & not Lantana camara L.
Pl. give your views so that I can make necessary changes in efloraofindia accordingly.

- lantana is a weed, which can overpower native vegetation easily. It spreads quickly and destroys whatever comes in its way. And to think that it came to India only during WWII. Its seeds are poisonous to birds and humans when raw.
Lantana camara is having about 600 varities, it has medicinal value as antimicrobial, antiseptic but it is toxic also mainly hepato toxic.

I attach images of a very common plant found everywhere and flowers are loved by many species of butterflies. Everybody knows that it is a Lantana, me too!
But, which Lantana? Is it Lanatana camara or is it Lantana alba or Lantana camara var alba?
I shot these photos on 17/02/2012 at around 10 A.M.
I think this is Lantana camara
Noxious weed....
Thank you for the information. This is a very common species here, growing on roadsides and along the sides of railway track. I am drawn to this plant because many butterfly species visit it.
Appears similar to white coloured form as at Lucid Central.
Yes Sir, it is Lantana camara L.

Lantana indica Roxb. SN Mar 30 : 10 posts by 5 authors. Attachments (2).
Lantana indica Roxb. Fam: Verbenaceae; Shrub growing in the hedges of agriculture land, near Shimoga Karnataka
But this looks like Lantana camara only, ...
Yes this should be Lantana camara. L. indica is extremely different. For comparison, please find images of L. indica collected from Nelliyampathy Forest, Palakkad during November 2013.
Yes, it is Lantana camara only.
Lantan indica have an elongated inflorescence axis. It produce white flowers in Uttarakhand.
There are several hues of flowers, rudimentary spines were seen in the specimen I studeied. Lantan camera mostly available in plani areas That is the reason for wrong identification. I accept the comments of you friends.
Why is there a varied hue of colours in L.camara sir? Is that because of the altitude variations?
Yes, it is due to altitude, that is what in Matthew flora of Tamilnadu carnatic says, edaphic factor may also play role. Several cultivated dwarf varieties of Lantana are are available in the nurseries.

would be great if anybody could guide me to the direction of what flower this might be. I suspect this could be obvious but I have no education in botanic and the variable colours and inflorescence make it difficult to parameterize the search on web.
I have only single picture, sorry. Taken around Pookode lake in Kerala (~770 m above sea), on July 28, 2012. Growing wild, bloom smelled intensively if I remember correctly.
Lantana camara.

Yes, magenta Lantana camara

Elevation is less than 500m above mean sea level
In that case it can be a variant.

From this comprehensive link about lantana camara, I got this
L. camara is a highly variable species which has been widely cultivated for over 300 years. Hundreds of cultivars and hybrids exist (Howard, 1969) and most of them belong to the L. camara complex (Stirton, 1979). Cultivars can be distinguished morphologically (flower size, shape and colour; leaf size, hairiness and colour; stem thorniness; height and branch architecture), physiologically (growth rates, toxicity to livestock) and by their chromosome number and DNA content (Stirton, 1979; Gujral and Vasudevan, 1983; Scott et al., 1997). Two groups are often recognised: one with few or no spines commonly found in the neotropics and one with spines in other parts of the world where the species is troublesome (Howard, 1970; Swarbrick, 1986). In the Pacific Islands the most common variety is the prickly L. camara var. aculeata (Thaman, 1974).
Lantana camara var. lantana should be the autonym for non-prickle variety, though this name is not in use.
In the plant list , there are more than 20 synonyms , not all making sense .

Need ID Confirmation for this typical Lantana sp. : 7 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (4)- around 600 kb each.
The attached plant pictures show the unique features of the Lantana sp. Whole plant does not have any prickles and the young branches are sticky.
It is widely grown in different areas of Papum Pare of Arunachal Pradesh.

Lantana camara var. aculeata ??

Lantana camara subsp. aculeata as per details herein and as per another thread: Need ID confirmation of this typical Lantana sp.
" In the Pacific Islands the most common variety is the prickly L. camara var. aculeata (Thaman, 1974). "
Quotes statement is taken from https://www.cabi.org/isc/datasheet/29771 .
That means, non prickly variety should be L. camara var. camara
I must admit, I could not find a description for var. camara in one and half hour on net.
Flora of Pakistan gives some 6-7 varieties, no description, no var. camara
In fact in a 1996 article on JSTOR, a drawing showed L. camara var. camara with prickles.
Thank you Sir for the clarification. I found this paper about several Lantana species and I hope this will help in the future (attached a pdf document)

LANTANA FLOWER QUERY: I needed ur expert guidance on this flower of the lantana that I have attached. It is orange in colour and is in full bloom in the lower shiwaliks. Could u tell me whether this orange colour is rare as compared to the standard yellow/pinkish flowers? Could u tell me in general about the lantana weed?
- This not rare at all. It is seen everywhere in the south. I have plenty of it along my fencing and am struggling to get rid of the young plants that sprout in the farm. The birds are fond of its fruit and it grows without any problem wherever it is dropped.
- lantana is a good butterfly attraacting shrub. i have the yellow ad commo pink varieties. How can I get the other coloues mauve, orange , red, white???  i do not think they grow from seed. FA
- Lantana is nothing new to India..... agree... and this color is  neither... I have seen this quite often in western
India along roadsides, as weeds.... never photographed it (ha ha) because its a "weed".  I have yellow in my garden here...very hardy . and pinkish mauve  in a hanging basket.. that vareity is not so hardy...,
- yes there are varieties of colours in flowering. First I thought this could be due to the the altitude variation, but later on it was not true. experts could throw light on this.
- During student life I was not aware of existence of orange flowered Lantana. I met him during College Tour to Ooty. Later I observed it many times specially on hills. Orange flowered Lantana is commonly planted in gardens due to its color. Orange flowered Lantana is used as medicine along with other Lantana.

Lantana: My Lantana story is out in the May issue of Planet Earth. It has an emag but you have to register. Look at pages 40-43. I have a PDF for those interested.
I never knew its branches are that strong that they can be turned into furniture.. extraordinary.... live and learn I guess..

FROM THE NATURE: 1 correct image as above.
Attaching few images. First image is on symbiosis, where a Peacock Pansy butterfly is on Lantana. Second image is of a samara which I collected from Lalbag at Bangalore in 1994. This samara is18cm in length and 11cm wide. I don't know the identity of the plant. Third image is of Large Caggagewhite butterfly on the flower of a plant whose identity is not known to me. And last image is of the leaves of the plant in image three. Can anybody help me?
Number 2...the very large almost 7 inches long samara could be from a tree from south america I have seen in a western botanical garden .... a legume... yellow jacaranda ... may be one is planted in Bangalore... were there jacaranda type trees near by your collection site? the sweep of the fibres from the wing remind me of the one I
have seen...neither photographed nor collected and saved... the seed itself looks fuzzy...is it? could be a drying effect of sooo long a time..since 1994...

However it is his choice.

we don't interfere with … choice. its extremely nice of him to include us in his mailings and we are the richer for it.
Not interference just my wish !

Lantana involucrata in FOI : 5 posts by 2 authors.
I think you are right ... This may be a white cultivar of Lantana camara. Its leaves are pointed or blunt, similar to Lantana camara, and not rounded like Lantana involucrata. This was photographed in cultivation, so no question of it being wild at all. Thanks for this important correction.
Side view, to show the linear bracts.
