15102011GS3 a herb from Mussoorie Chakrata road for ID:  Small herb photographed along Mussoorie Chakrata road near Dakpathar and near Baratkhai. small delicate herb less than 20 cm tall, with reddish stem, densely spreading hairy especially on leaves; leaves lanceolate, 2-3 cm long, narrowed into very short petiole, base gradually narrowed; flowers barely 2 mm or so, in dense axillary clusters, reddish.
Requesting for ID
Pouzolzia by any chance?
Sir it appears to me that your picture Dubia-12-MJussoorie Chakrata road near Bharatkhai-2.jpg is different from other two as it was taken arround 12.00PM on 16-9 and other two at 10.00 AM. Correct me if i am wrong
Yes they were taken from two different places, as written along with photographs but I could not find any difference. Please tell me if you find any.
I observed a little difference in shape of leaves. I may be wrong in this observation.
Thanks for a big lead ...  I have never seen this in the field. Out of the four species described in Flora Simlensis, it fits best with P. indica. Initially I would have gone for P. hirta probable because of strongly hairy leaves but latter has 3-15 cm long leaves, whereas this plant did not have any leaf longer than 3 cm.
Please check species of Urtica as well.
Finally identified as Pouzolzia zeylanica var. zeylanica
Distinct upper veins clinched the issue.

Pouzolzia zeylanica (Linn.) Benn. var. zeylanica from Dakpathar and Mussoorie Chakrata Road.: Pouzolzia zeylanica (Linn.) Benn., Pl.Jay. Rar. 66. 1838 var. zeylanica
syn: P. auriculata Wight; P. indica L. ; P. indica var. alienata; P. indica var. angustifolia Wedd.; P. indica var. tetraptera Wedd.; P. indica var. diffusa Hook.f. ; P. indica var. microphylla Hook.f.; P. tuberosa Wight; P. vesicaria Wight

Photographed in September from near Dakpathar and near Baratkhai along road to Chakrata.
This plant was difficult to fix because of lot of variation in this species, but then distinct upper veins clinched the issue.

The Plant List shows different name from its stated IPNI link: The Plant List shows different name from its stated IPNI link from where it has stated to have derived its name.
e.g. it gives Pouzolzia zeylanica (L.) Benn. & R. Br. as per link http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/tro-33400676
but when one clicks on IPNI link on this page it shows off as Pouzolzia zeylanica ( L. ) Benn.
I noticed a few other similar discrepancies. I think there are many.
Thus, in such cases where stated name does not appear to be correct, it's better to first check its IPNI link on the page.
This time I think The Plant List is correct, as evidenced by citation in monograph on World Species by Wilmot and Friis

I think Yes.
From earlier discussions the above pictures match with P. zeylanica. Esp the additional pair of veins in the middle of the leaf above the base.
"Erect or ascending perennial hairy herb; leaves opposite, sometimes alternate, gradually reduced in size upwards; petiole 2-4 mm long; stipules 2-4 mm long, triangular-ovate, ciliate; leaf ovate to narrowly lanceolate, 1.5-7 cm long, one or two lateral veins from middle portion of leaf in addition to basal pair of lateral veins, rigidly hairy especially along veins; floral clusters axillary, ciliate along margin; female flowers sessile, male with 1.5-2 mm long pedicel, flowers 4-5 merous; fruiting perianth strongly ribbed or winged; achene shining black to brown."

You make identification so easy in the first line, and also so tricky in the rest of the mail!
The rest of the mail with red text has been copied from an earlier mail from some orher member which describes the plant details. I mentioned the relevent detail in one single line.
The red text is very much like the descriptions of various species in FoC and FoP and it is quite hard to understand for common people.

Plant for ID Pakkamalei, Tamil Nadu NAW-OCT-25 : 2 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (5)
Kindly identify this this plant with caulifloral pink flowers photographed at the Pakkamalai Reserve Forest, Tamil Nadu in September 2014.
I didn't get a picture of the habit - but these were growing forming a uniform bunch growing over an area about 5-6 metres wide and a metre thick. Maximum height was less than 1 metre.
Leaves possibly 3-4 cm. long. minute flowers along the stem.

It is Pouzolzia zeylanica (L.) Benn.

Yes, with changed name Gonostegia hirta (Blume) Miq. (=Pouzolzia hirta (Blume) Hassk.).
Thank you very much for confirming. But, FoC says that the leaves in Gonostegia hirta (Blume) Miq. are opposite.
With alternate leaves we have the possibility of G.pentandra as per FoC. Which looks like attached image. I feel your plant is not closer to G.pentandra; or it is yet not with well developed flowers.
Thank you, very very much, for helping.
Yesterday, i also thought of G. pentandra, but stopped short of. Instead i set it to our group.
Bengal Plants has 5 Pouzolzia, i copy below -
I. Lobes of the male perianth convex or gibbous, on the back (all three now syn. of P. zeylanica (L.) Benn. & R. Br. var. zeylanica as per Let us identify our Pouzolzia species)
  • 1) P. indica Gaud. : leaves mostly alternate, base cuneate, nerves 1 pair above the basal.... = In most of the provinces
  • 2) P. indica var. alienata Wedd. : leaves mostly opposite, base rounded, nerves 1 pair above the basal..... = In all the provinces
  • 3) P. auriculata Wight : leaves all alternate, nerves many, branching; stamens always 5 = Chota Nagpur
II. Lobes of male perianth abruptly inflexed about the middle, transversely folded at the flexure, hence the buds truncate; leaves with three simple primary leaves running nearly or quite to leaf apex :-
  • 4) P. pentandra Benn. : stem terminating in a bracteate spike = Orissa, Chota Nagpur (FI informs it can be found about Calcutta)
  • 5) P. hirta Hassk. : stem not running out into a bracteate spike = Chota Nagpur
The above is Greek to me!
However, Bengal Plants equates P. indica Gaud. with Urtica suffruticosa of Flora Indica.
Flora indica informs (U. suffruticosa) :-
"Suffruticose, leaves alternate, lanceolate, broadest at the base, entire, three nerved, smooth...... Female calyx one-leaved, with a contracted, bidentate mouth; and the outside deeply ribbed and hairy..."
Any chance (pic P1030738.jpg)?
If flowers develops, the issue can be solved with confidence. To me it appears that flowers are yet to develop in this plant.
Revisited the plant today, took some statistics. This herb is about 2ft., with small branches. Not, sure if there was any prostrate main stem. The place was moist and covered by other weeds. Leaves are all alternate, smaller in the lower part of the stem (last pic).
Don't know if it will help. Will try to revisit after some days.
Current Classification & keys can be seen at Pouzolzia for Indian taxa.
This plant is in flowering in Pantnagar and dissection of flower indicate that it is Gonostegia hirta (=Pouzolzia hirta) only. The character of leaves (opposite/ alternate/ subalternate) is not a reliable character since I have seen this plant with opposite as well as alternate leaves. Pouzolzia and Gonostegia are differentiated as follows:
Tepals 4 in male flowers, stamens 4, not inflexed................................................Pouzolzia
Tepals 5 in male flowers, stamens 5, inflexed ....................................................Gonostegia
Thank you Sir for the ID and details
I think it should be P. zeylanica (L.) Benn. & R. Br. var. zeylanica as per images herein & as per keys at ‎Pouzolzia
