edible herb Hooghly 7-1-13 sk1: The owner of this herb claims it is edible and she collected it from Puri, a few years ago. Two or three of this herb is now growing wild in front of her home-yard.
Species : UNKNOWN
H & H : about 1 ft high, edible as vegetable
Date : 6/1/13
Plcae : Hooghly

this is ceylon spinach
I have had it growing in a pot and from there out into the lawn, it self seeds like crazy.
Beautiful deep pink to outright magenta flowers are very attractive.
Leaves have a sourish taste, and I think it has oxalates, so folks with kidney trouble or blood vessel problem which includes most indians past 40 or 45 (atherosclerosis in any form) should not eat a whole bunch of it or any oxalate crystals containing veggies)
flowers of india site has a page: Ceylon spinach on foi
Daves gaden site ceylon sphinach is lumped with suriname and/ or phillipines spinach here has lumped this one and other similar "spinaches" but look closely and you'll see that the leaves and the flowers look different.
A few years ago all herbal nurseries carried this ... I dont see it anymore. Not very popular I guess.

Garden Flower For ID : MNP,Mumbai : 240214 : AK-21 : 15 posts by 5 authors. Attachments (2).
Garden flowers seen at MNP on 21/2/14.
Seems to be Talinum.
Species id please.
Perhaps Talinum fruticosum
This plant looks similar to my earlier post - https://groups.google.com/d/msg/indiantreepix/BhNgvrD7sFw/tKUifvvAch4J. But I do not know what will be current accepted name of this plant, because -
1) Earlier I received the ID, in a personal mail, as Talinum portulacefolium (Forsk.) Asch ex Scaw. Syn Portulaca cuneifolia Vahl., whereas eFI and FoI identifies it as Talinum fruticosum (L.) Juss.
2) Species found in FoZ - http://www.zimbabweflora.co.zw/speciesdata/genus.php?genus_id=563
Wish to know one more thing - what do the following two links mean?
  1. http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/tro-50007700
  2. http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/record/kew-2565922
Have a nice day
First is the record from The Plant List (tpl). 2nd is the record from (revised) The plant List Ver. 1.1 (tpl1.1)
Can be Talinum triangulara.
Thank you very much ..., that leads us again to Talinum fruticosum (L.) Juss.
And "The Plant List" has two options -
  1. http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/record/kew-2513617
  2. http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl1.1/record/kew-2513617?ref=tpl1

Again first is the record from The Plant List (tpl).
2nd is the record from (revised) The plant List Ver. 1.1 (tpl1.1)

We have now to follow the revised list (2nd is the record from (revised) The plant List Ver. 1.1 (tpl1.1)).
Thanks ... I take it as Talinum fruticosum (L.) Juss, Syn Talinum triangulare.

Presenting for ID,
An edible cultivated short plant at home garden ..Talinum sp. ?
Location : Chennai outskirts
Date :13.09.2019
Elevation : 23 mts.

I think this should be Talinum fruticosum (L.) Juss. as per keys and details herein.

Lalithamba ji's image of Talinum cuneifolium Willd. (syn. of Talinum portulacifolium (Forssk.) Asch. ex Schweinf.) on Flickr and Useful tropical plants should be of Talinum fruticosum as per keys and details herein.
There is lot of confusion in net between the two. Finally I could get keys between the two at Prota4U as below:
Talinum triangulare is sometimes confused with Talinum portulacifolium, but the latter differs by its paniculate inflorescence with terete axis, sepals not prominently veined and smooth seeds as per Prota4U (Talinum triangulare (Jacq.) Willd. syn. of Talinum fruticosum (L.) Juss.)
Talinum portulacifolium is sometimes confused with Talinum triangulare, which is also used as a vegetable. The latter species differs in its pink flowers arranged in cymes on triangular stalks, sepals prominently 3-veined and tuberculate seeds as per Prota4U (Talinum portulacifolium)
Pl. correct.
Thank you ..., I have posted Talinium fruticosum in another flickr; that plant is different from this. both are captured in different locations. if you observe the axis is 3-angled, not terete (cylindrical); at each node the flowers are in simple cymes, hence after a lot of search I have posted. I am sorry I could not correct it since the password for the account was hacked, unable to open after several trials, hence new flicker account has been opened. Thank you once again

Plant id pl. only this photo.
Talinum fruticosum of Portulacaceae.
I had also seen this plant in Sri Lanka.

Yes, it is Talinum only, I too agree with ...
The ID is correct. I have this plant in my garden in Mysore. We have been using this plant  as a leafy vegetable since a decade or two!. It is commonly known as 'Ceylone basale' in Tamil. Also grown in many houses in Chennai as a leafy vegetable.
