Smilax macrophylla Roxb. = S. ovalifolia Roxb. = S. retusa Roxb.:
Flora Indica describes :-
(i) ...leaves sub-ovate, cordate, retuse.... triple nerved.... --------- S. retusa R.
(ii) ...leaves sub-rotund, five-nerved, glossy.... ------ S. macrophylla R.
(iii) ...leaves oval, smooth, five to seven nerved.... petioles short, winged... jointed just above the tendrills... ----- S. ovalifolia R.
F. B. I. vi. 310. describes :-
S. macrophylla Roxb. ......... "This is, I think, undoubtedly Roxburgh's ovalifolia as well as his macrophylla. It is best distinguished from prolifera, by the narrow sheath of the petiole, but both are so variable with foliage, that young shoots of prolifera with undeveloped sheaths may be mistaken for macrophylla.
Bengal Plants ii. 1071. describes :-
Smilax macrophylla Roxb.; F. I. iii. 793.; F. B. I, vi. 310.; E. D. S. 2252. S. retusa F. I. iii. 793. S. obvalifolia F. I. iii. 794.
Chota Nagpur; W. Bengal; Chittagong.
A large, prickly climber. Hindi. Jangli aushbah; Beng. Kumarika; Santal. Atkir.
I think this species is Smilax macrophylla Roxb. of the "Bengal Plants", recorded yesterday in Hooghly. And according to the Flora Indica it would blossom in June.

Requesting to please ID this climber captured at SGNP, Mumbai in September 2013.

Based on your response, I am attaching some other pics of similar climbers taken at SGNP in May/July 2013.
Could you please confirm if these are also Smilax ovalifolia?
The first 2 are of Dioscorea bulbifera, the remaining are S.ovalifolia.

Smilax zeylanica of LILIACEAE
Yes,
Smilax zeylanica.

I think Smilax ovalifolia Roxb. ex D.Don rather than Smilax zeylanica L. as per images and details herein.

identification no 2012sn2-reposting: I am reposting my query. I had by mistake chosen the wrong option for attachments. Sorry for the inconvienience. Kindly identify the plant. Locals call it "ghotvel". I think it is Smilax ovalifolia.
date/time:may12
location:mulshi,pune
habitat:wild
plant habit:climber
It does look like Smilax, but leaves are required to confirm id.
The fruits were seen growing on another tree and it was difficult to distinguish the leaves. My impression is that the leaves were not large. I shall shortly post the tree (on which some other fruit were seen). But the locals have identified as "Ghotvel" for sure.
Smilax is a climber and the leaves seen in the picture are not of the climber. As ... said without leaves it is not possible to come to a conclusion on species of Smilax.

I have posted some more pics for better identification. As you can see there are other dark fruits on this tree and their were only one type of leaves.
6 correct images.
The last 3 pictures are of Olea dioica and others are fruits of species of Smilax
I am posting the latest pic of this same climber with leaves taken in jan13. Will it be possible to identify now?
This is a species of Smilax possibly S. zeylanica.
I think may be more closer to Smilax ovalifolia Roxb. ex D.Don rather than Smilax zeylanica L. (based on the relative size of the umbel and pedicels therein)
Smilax ovalifolia Roxb. ex D.Don
Internodes are much longer to S. zeylanica.

Smilax zeylanica L. SN Aug 36 : 1 post by 1 author. Attachments (1).
Smilax zeylanica L. is stout spinous tendril climber from Yercaud area of Tamilnadu at an altitude of 1300m

I think more closer to Smilax ovalifolia Roxb. ex D.Don rather than Smilax zeylanica L. as per images and details herein (based on the relative size of the umbel and the pedicels).

There is possibility for Smilax blumei A.DC. (= Smilax perfoliata Lour)

Can you show better images or Original image ?

I would prefer go with Smilax ovalifolia for the time being with these images.

Ok, thanks ...
