I think this is found in India too. yes common in bengal... called gandha-bhadulia... used for rejuvenation, made up in a multi med concoction/ brew....kwatha... even Chakradatta described it way back when ...never seen the flowers, and ... the buds look like modern day large med capsules... spectacular...
As you can see the bengali name is "gandha" may be referring to smell and so does "foetida" mean, "foul smell". I am sharing my Flora picture of the Year, 2012. Since last 3 years i was searching to get a view of how Paederia foetida looks when in full bloom. I have visited so many local and regional hot spots of Biodiversity in Odisha during my documentation of Flora of Odisha. But could not find this plant flowering. Even if i encountered good population of this species, all were in vegetative stage. I came to know that this species is listed under RET by FRLHT and flowering is not common. Finally last year i spotted this species flowering near to my office at Sahid nagar, Bhubaneswar in wild condition. I was very very happy and took around 50 snaps. Presenting my picture bellow. Excellent picture. I have seen this plant in Hong Kong on the roadsides. I used to mistake it for Asclepiads because of the oppose leaves. But finally I learnt how to differentiate it. Just touch the leaf and smell your hands, it gives a bad smell, probably that is why the species epithet "foetida" . I have never seen the flower and it is very nice to see the beautiful flowers of this plant. I've encountered this plant many times in Arunachal and Vietnam. Raw or boiled leaves are eaten by the local communities of Arunachal Pradesh (and probably in Assam too) to get rid of the stomach pain. I remember eating 'Bhajji/Pakora' made up of the leaves, offered by one of my Assamese neighbors when I was in Arunachal. They used to call it Paderu patta (पदेडू पत्ता =Leaf with farty smell :-)). Oh! What a lovely plate!!! Wonderful!!! And best wishes for your book on Flora of Odisha. Something really unique for presenting as Flora picture of the year 2012. I have included it. You can view the latest edited blog on Flora picture 2012 Unlike "Bengal Plants" or FBI, The Plant List or eFI informs Paederia foetida L. and Paederia tomentosa Bl. are synonymous. Supporting ... Id pl. It was a climber on the cluster of shrub in the open patch, with a very pleasant smell. Paederia foetida L. It is Paederia foetida L. flowers were fragrant-pleasant and sweet smelling. Yes ma'm... but the crushed leaves smell bad. Popularly known as 'Paderu patta' (पदेरू-पत्ता) or 'Paadu patta' (पादू-पत्ता). :-) Probably the leaves have medicinal properties. Have seen locals eating as 'Bhajji' or 'Pakauda' if the stomach is upset. This vine looks different than what I saw and posted in my earlier upload. It is growing in a home yard and I am not sure if all leaves I have photographed are of the same plant. The leaves of this particular individual appeared to me different in shape and significantly bigger in size. Photographed the day before yesterday (4.11.14), in Hooghly District (West Bengal) Lamina length 14cm avg., petiole 10 cm avg. Leaves have typical unpleasant smell. The climber is Paederia foetida of Rubiaceae. The leaves are used for making a curry with raw plantain and black pepper to get relieve from arthritis. You do not get the bad smell of the leaves when it is used as curry. Paederia foetida L. : 2 posts by 2 authors.
