Nice photographs ... First photograph reminds me of Morus. leaves are of course different
Most of the times that I observed this plant, found the inflorescence to be always skywards.
Interesting to see it pendulous.
Me too have one such finding from Veermata Jeejabai Bhosale Udyan - http://www.flickr.com/photos/dinesh_valke/4851878841/
Inadvertent typo - the name is Hymenodictyon orixense.

Thanks ... I think id is resolved now and does not seem contrary to views expressed herein...

Dear friends, please help validate the ID.

very nice case presentation. i generally FIRST look up foi if it shows up in google. but in this case, the FOI photos are by you and validated by ... FOC illustration matches except for their details of the edges of leaves with anastomosing veins. do you by any chance have veins showing?
I tried finding out what anastomosing veins are (on net). But I did not clearly understand what it means.
Among the posted pictures, 2nd and 3rd shows veins arising from midrib, but I am not able to check for anastomosing veins.

This should be Hymenodictyon obovatum Wall., flower/fruits sessile, capsules not pendulous but erect.

Thanks … for this ID validation. Will revise my notes at flickr soon.
Superb upload by ... Very nicely compiled. Kannada names are correct.
The Tungareshwar images are H. obovatum
The image of the leaves taken at BNHS looks to me like H. orixense
Thank you very very much … for validating the Kannada names of Hymenodictyon orixense.
I agree ... Thank you very very much. I will revise my notes accordingly.
I have been looking at the set of photos posted from the tree at Mahuli. These seem to be of H. orixense.
The flowers do not seem to be sessile as in H. obovatum. The styles of the open flowers are very long which is a feature of H. orixense.
The new leaves are pubescent (if you blow up the pictures in Flickr) which also points to H. orixense.
And the habit of the tree in the picture lacks the flattish top and more horizontal branching of H. obovatum.
Thanks very much ... for this validation

I am sure this is H. obovatum. The elliptic or obovate leaves, abruptly acuminate, clearly seen in the leaves, sessile flowers. Have mentioned these characteristics  a few days back to ID the same plant.  The other main distinguishing feature is the stipule with glandular margins. Attaching a pic. of the same from the same tree pics I had taken and also close up of flowers.
To me these appears more closer to images of Hymenodictyon orixense
This should be Hymenodictyon orixense (Roxb.) Mabb.
It seems to be Hymenodictyon excelsum (syn. H. orixense).

Saw  this wonderful tree fruiting and young leaves in last week of June '10. at the Yeoor side of the national park in Mumbai. The distinguishing feature being the obovate-oblong stipules with glandular margins.

Description of the plant from "Forest Flora of Hyderabad State - by M Sharfuddin Khan"
Description: http://forest.ap.nic.in/Forest%20Flora%20of%20Andhra%20Pradesh/Flora%20by%20M%20Sharfuddin%20Khan/Botanical%20Names/Hymenodictyon%20obovatum.htm
I think this is better. Indian plant of which description is being referred from Indian treatise. Flora of British India is lying for free on the net. That may also be used.....much better than referring to Pakistan or China.....
And yeah please, my comment is not due to political issues of India with them, its just not appropriate botanically!!!
From the fruiting images, to me these appears to be of Hymenodictyon orixense
Hymenodictyon orixense (Roxb.) Mabb.

Nice pics. I think this is H. obovatum Wall. because stipules are obovate oblong with glandular margins and leaves elliptic or obovate. H.orixense has stipules broadly oblong, obtuse recurved, deciduous.
Very good demonstration of photography of plant character.
H.obovatum
from me too.
I have never seen this tree. Still according to descriptions from books, though the leaves here are not clearly obovate, Leaves appear glabrous rather than pubescent. The petiole here (Picture129) is glabrous above and pubescent beneath which goes in favour of H.obovatum.
In other species it is pubescent on both surfaces.
By the way is it the classical example of interpetiolar stipule?I think so.
To me these appears more closer to images of Hymenodictyon orixense as per
Leaves pubescent - Hymenodictyon orixense (Roxb.) Mabb.

Posting a photo of tree taken in Yeoor Jungle on 13.06.2010.The leaves were very velvety and soft like some tomantosa species. Can you pl. help identifying?

This is Kuthan [Hymenodictyon obovatum].
Hymenodictyon obovatum, Wall.; F.B.I. III-36. Brandi's Ind. Trees. 372. Gamble's Ind. Timbers, 407. Vern. Kurvi, Mar.
----- A large tree. Leaves crowded at the ends of the branches, generally obovate, abruptly acuminate, some of the upper ones oblong or ovate, glabrous on both sides except the axils of the nerves beneaeth, about 4 in. long by 2 1/4 - 2 1/2 broad, pinnate veins rather prominent; petioles 1 1/2 - 2 in. long; stipules ovate or oblong, gland-serrated, deciduous. Flowers pentamerous, small, sessile, or sub-sessile furnished with linear, narrow, stiff bracts at their base in dense cylindrical racemes, which are terminal, erect, pubescent, several together, generally simple, rarely with one or two branches, each generally furnished with only one floral leaf just below the flowers, which is a little rugose above, pure white or cream-coloured, beautifully veined and reticulated and slightly pubescent beneath about 2 in. long and on a shining petiole of the same length; sometimes this floral leaf is absent on one or more of the racemes. Calyx very hairy, lobes lanceolate, acute. Stamens monadelphous in a tube which is adnate to the base of the corolla, but easily separable. Capsule 2-celled, 2-valved, dehiscing loculicidally; seeds flat, imbricate, surrounded by a reticulated wing which is bifid at the base.

Hymenodictyon orixense (Roxb.) Mabb., must be planted by Mr Shekhar Gaikwad, Nashik with vernacular name "Bhorsal".
Yes. Absolutely correct.
Planted by Mr Shekhar Gaikwad, who has been doing a lot of tree planting in and around Nasik.

Dear friends, please help validate the ID.

very nice case presentation. i  generally FIRST look up foi if it shows up in google but in this case, the FOI photos are by you and validated by … FOC illustration marches except for their details of the edges of leaves with anastomosing veins. do you by any chance have veins showing?
I tried finding out what anastomosing veins are (on net). But I did not clearly understand what it means.
Among the posted pictures, 2nd and 3rd shows veins arising from midrib, but I am not able to check for  anastomosing veins.
I agree with your id as per comparative images at Hymenodictyon

Hymenodictyon orixense (Roxb.) Mabb.
