Galium sp?? -- at Shakati - GHNP - PKA57
: 6 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (3)
Seen this small herb at Shakati at GHNP at an altitude of approx. 2300m.
Date/Time: 01-10-2014 / 02:00PM
Family: Rubiaceae
Bot. name: Galium sp.?? (Could this be Galium asperifolium??), pl  validate,
efi page on Galium asperifolium
Yes G. asperifolium
Should have been photographed sans the broad leaved plant in background. Still the flowering plant with whorled leaves looks like Galium rotundifolium.
I have never seen or read about G. rotundifolium with more than 4 leaves in a whorl. This is more likely G. hirtiflorum (syn: G. ciliatum) which according to eFlora of Pakistan has 4-6 leaves. Leaves clearly match this species, but then there is another catch both eFlora of China and FBI mention 4 leaves in a whorl, and my experience has shown that it is not always reliable to depend on eFlora of Pakistan.

This looks different from Galium hirtiflorum as per GBIF.
I think it is close to Galium hoffmeisteri as per GBIF. Pl. see specimens below:

This beautiful Galium has mostly four leaves in whorls. I found a few in flower and took photographs for a proper ID. Please advise.

Galium species in eFloraofindia (with details/ keys from published papers/ regional floras/ FRLHT/ FOI/ Biotik/ efloras/ books etc., where ever available on net)
It appears Galium elegans based on Flora of Chamba and Flora of Kullu.
Plants in the background are of Pilea umbrosa (Shady Himalayan Clearweed)
Thank you ... Are these books on Flora of Chamba and Kullui available?
These books, published by a Dehradun based publisher,  are available in the market. You can also search online.
Thank you ... I will look online. If you find more details such as publishers name, please share with me.
G. elegans should have 3-veined leaves
. I can't see in any image. Please check in other shots.

Thank you ... Here is another photo from that day. I can’t see the veins here too. 1 image.
These images look different from those of Galium elegans by ... as per VOF Week: ID request-06-08-2012: en-route Joshimath (including flower colour)
This should be Galium elegans, characterized by 4 whorled leaves, and white or greenish flowers.
http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=5&taxon_id=200022087
Leaves look like those of Galium asperifolium, however I am not sure if it can have 4 leaves only.

Thank you ... I have the same question whether G. asperifolium can have four leaves in a whorl. Perhaps we will have some guidance soon.
Does not match with images at Galium asperifolium

I think it is close to Galium hoffmeisteri as per GBIF. Pl. see specimens below:

I think Galium hirtiflorum
Thanks, ..., G. hirtiflorum is different as per GBIF.
Problem with hoffmeisteri is never less than 6 leaves are reported.
Flora of China says for Galium hoffmeisteri (Klotzsch) Ehrendorfer & Schönbeck-Temesy ex R. R. Mill "Middle stem leaves and leaflike stipules in whorls of up to 6 (in weak plants rarely only up to 4),........."
Pl. see FOC illustration, it shows five.
See GBIF specimens with even 4 leaves:

Thank you ... Reading the description on FOC, G. hirtiflorum seems a good match. Unfortunately, GBIF has only dried specimens, which are difficult to match with the photos of the fresh plants.
Perhaps, it needs more photos too. I will do my best this season.
It is Galium hoffmeisteri only.
Pl. see Galium hirtiflorum at SK1393 30 AUG 2018 and SK1364 09 AUG 2018
Yes ...

I found a couple more images showing fruit to add to the collection.

I think you are right for hoffmeisteri.

Galium hirtiflorum Requien ex DC
The leaves 4-6 in number, lanceolate to oblanceolate, glabrous on upper surface, fruit covered with hooked hairs.
Clicked from near Ukhimath towards Chopta, Uttarakhand, May 31, 2013.

Thanks, ..., G. hirtiflorum is different as per GBIF.

same problem, never less than 6 leaves in hoffmeisteri

Flora of China says for Galium hoffmeisteri (Klotzsch) Ehrendorfer & Schönbeck-Temesy ex R. R. Mill "Middle stem leaves and leaflike stipules in whorls of up to 6 (in weak plants rarely only up to 4),........."
Pl. see FOC illustration, it shows five.
See GBIF specimens with even 4 leaves:

Thanks ..., that solves problem, then all our specimens suggested as hirtiflorum should be G. hoffmeisteri, whatever is its current nomenclature status.
