Argostemma verticillatum

Argostemma verticillatum Wall., Fl. Ind. 2: 325 1824. (Syn: Argostemma acutum Wall. ex Hook.f.; Argostemma glaberrimum Dalzell);

Small herbs. Leaves in whorls of 3 or 4, mostly confined to the apex of stem, to 5 x 1 cm, linear-lanceolate, subsessile, membranous, glabrous; lateral nerves indistinct; stipules interpetiolar, entire or 0. Flowers 5-merous, 1.2 cm across, in terminal few flowered umbels, peduncles slender, shorter than the leaves. Calyx glabrous, lobes ovate-acute. Corolla white, lobes ovate-acuminate. Staminal filaments short, anthers connate, dehiscence by apical pores. Ovules many on projected placenta; style filiform; stigma capitate.

I have been seeing this growing out of stone retaining walls on my walks. I am not sure if grows on the ground too-I am yet to come across one. The flower is tiny, not more than 1-2cm. The whole plant in the picture must be 6-7cm.

I found out the only common name for Argostemma verticillatum is in Chinese 'Xiao xue hua'.
Are we aware of any English name?

Two species of Agrostemma known in Uttarakhand.
Flowers with 4 petals.....A.sarmentosum; flowers with five petals...... A. verticillatum.
Both often grow together along streams, on moist walls in rainy season.

Yes, beautiful pics. Never seen on tree trunks in our area.
Thank you ... We have them on walls, rock faces, the ground and on the trees. These plants were growing on a wild pear tree.

It should be Argostemma sp. (Rubiaceae). Looks closer to A. verticillatum. Argostemma in eFI.
