Rosaceae Week: Potentilla nepalensis from Chakrata: Potentilla nepalensis
From Chakrata Yes .... Perhaps important to mention that species can often be confused with P. antrosanguinea but can be distinguished by smaller flowers and more importantly lower leaves with 5 leaflets. Rosaceae Week: Potentilla nepalensis_RKC04_04102011: Potentilla nepalensis for you.
Loc.: On way to Churdhar, Himachal Pradesh (ca 1500m) Date: 10th August, 2010. Rosaceae Week- Is this Potentilla atrosanguinea ? from Cardiff, Wales.: This Pic was taken in d wild @ Cardiff , Wales, UK. Dated- July 2010. Looks like Potentilla atrosanguinea . Unfortunately I couldt find other pics of this sp, so for now I have only this. Rather Potentilla nepalensis; flowers with darker centre, smaller, leaflets less silky and more importantly lower leaves should have 5 leaflets. I am confused by this. You say "taken in the wild" in the UK but Cardiff is hardly "in in the wild" and this appears to a cultivated plant in a situation that as far as I can tell is in a cultivated area or very close to. Probably only partially naturalised - at most. There are no red-flowered Potentillas native to the UK. Potentilla nepalensis is listed in 'Alien Plants of the British Isles' as a casual garden escape i.e. not properly naturalised. I doubt very much that the PURE, original Potentilla nepalensis has escaped. There are quite a number of cultivars of P.nepalensis available but most have pink flowers. A hybrid between P.atrosanguinea and P.nepalensis is known. Of these, 'Gibson's Scarlet' is one of the common ones. I cannot see sufficient detail in the picture above to be certain but think it is entirely possible that the plant you photographed is a cultivar with some P.atrosanguinea in its ancestry or other Potentillas not necessarily of Himalayan origin. Once in cultivation especially in places where they are being bred and deliberately crossed, can rapidly get mixed-up. Does NOT appear pure P.nepalensis to me.
31 JUL 12 Auli ... 8750 - 9000 ft I think yes. It would have been great if you could upload lower pentafoliate leaves. ..., not sure if this cropped photo shows the basal leaf. Potentilla nepalensis from Chakrata: This one is Potentilla nepalensis Hook. captured from Deoban road, Chakrata, in September 2011. Thanks for sharing this wonderful set ...! Surprisingly, I could not find this name in either 'The Plant List' or 'Tropicos'.... But available in IPNI. Great colour combination of natural background and the petals. the anthers are clearly seen. SUPERB How come, you had yourself uploaded this species during Rosaceae The Plant List has more surprises than it helps us in correct names. This is one more case of names missing from the List. The species is described in eFlora of Pakistan, Also listed in Nepal listing on eFlora Yes sir.... I had photographed this plant during my Himachal trip. Just wanted to mention about the missing data from 'The plant list' and 'Tropicos'. Pictures are very nice indeed and I too agree with the ID. Really beautiful flower indeed. Darker central cluster of stamens of the flower clearly points it to Potentilla nepalensis. Another important pointer is the basal leaves with 5 leaflets visible in Image(4) I remember the earlier threads....... differentiating this one from Potentilla atrosanguinea Family: Rosaceae Date: May 2015 Place: Churdhar Sanctuary, Himachal Pradesh Habit: Herb Altitude: 2800 metres above sea level Potentilla nepalensis. see more than 3 leaflets and colour of flower Thank you for the correction, ...
