Meliaceae tree for identification 210712MK03:
Please help me to identify this tree. I think this is a Meliaceae member.
This lofty tree (up to 25 m) is common in the Valparai part of western ghats.
Leaves measure 10x3 cm and I could not make it out whether compound or simple. Branches drooping; fruits c. 5x2.5 cm. Flowers axillary. The fruits are devoured by Bears and other monkeys. The ripe fruit pulp has apple like texture to eat. mature fruits red-black.
Local Tamil name: Yemini
Place: Vaalparai, TN
Date: 13 July 2012
Alt.: 900 m asl
Please compare with Maesopsis emini (Rhamnaceae)
Many thanks ..., I read the descriptions and it matches with Maesopsis eminii Engler of Rhamnaceae. Thank you very much.
This African tree is often planted in coffee estates for shade. The local name of this tree is 'yemini' and that sounds similar to the specific epithet.
