Ranunculus hyperboreus from Apharwat Kashmir: Ranunculus hyperboreus Rottb., Skrift. Kjoeb. Selesk. 10: 458.1770 Small tuberous rooted perennial herb, stoloniferous, rooting at nodes; basal leaves up to 2.5 cm, reniform to orbicular, 3-7 lobed; cauline 3-lobed; flowers solitary 5 mm across, yellow; sepals 3-4 mm, reflexed; petals as long obovate. Photographed from Apharwat Kashmir in July, growing besides rocks, alt 3300 m it looks different from ours Chakrata ranunculus. Chakrata plant is hairy Ranunculus hyperboreus is characterized by 3 or 4 sepals and 3 or 4 petals. Your flowers appear to have 5-6 petals. So, I think it could be some other species of Ranunculus. I think this is Ranunculus diffusus (more specifically var. mollis) as per images, references and details herein. Please compare the size of petals in my images and those on efloraofindia website. In all those images petals are broader and longer than sepals, in mine they are almost same size, petals much narrower. Also compare descriptions in Indian Revision of Ranunculus. Thanks, ... So what else do you think ? Flora of China gives measurements as Sepals 5, elliptic-ovate, 4--6 mm, abaxially puberulent. Petals 5(or 6), narrowly obovate or oblong-obovate, 5--7 × 2--4 mm, Flora of Pakistan gives as Sepals 3-6 mm, ovate-lanceolate, 3-veined, with long patent hairs, membranous for the greater part. Petals oblong or narrowly obovate-oblong, without a claw. Also see shape of petals in FoC illustration. Details of flowers are also not very clear in your images and are mostly going towards fruiting stage, in which petals are weathering. I am an amateur/enthusiast with some knowledge of California native plants and plant families. Would like help from eminent scholars here on identifying plants from my travels through Garhwal and Sikkim last year. Will abide by posting guidelines; please pardon/point out any infractions. If any of you travel to northern California, would be delighted to take you on local hikes to see the botanical treasures of this area. March-May are particularly floriferous here. Location: Chopta, in bugyal at the start of the Tungnath trail Altitude: 2926 meters Date: May 8, 2015 Description: Low mat-forming groundcover The flower in the picture looks a Ranunculus species. The species level ID is possible with images of complete plant, leaves etc. It looks like Ranunculus bulbosus- the flower and leaf indicates it as Ranunculus Thank you for the helpful clue. I browsed the available Ranunculus pix on the EFI site, and I can understand now that leaf shape/size and side view is critical for identification. Will be more mindful of this in the future. Attaching another photo from the same location in which the pedicel is visible. 1 image. Pedicle looks glabrous and leaf looks thick like succulent.
