My earlier record was from 24-Parganas. This time I see it just 50m away from my front gate! I wondered where are the petals of these flowers as shown in other posts in the group? I found the answer at Lalithamba Ji's flickr upload.

The morphology of the plant does not resemble to Naravelia zeylanica
It is Naravelia zeylanica (L.) DC. It is represented by only one species, it is easy for identification.
Naravelia zeylanica (L.) DC. (Ranunculaceae) only.
We have only one species known in India as per Flora of India vol-1.

Beautiful!

I was surprised to see this climber growing very near our house.
The plant seems to be Naravelia zeylanica
I am waiting for the next year so that I can record the same flowers before they shed their petals.

Beautiful!
Naravelia differs from Clematis in having petals+sepals and having its terminal leaflet modified into tendril.

Attached are pictures of Naravelia zeylanica captured at Rajgad in December 2014.
Requested to please validate the ID.

Good post.
How did you IDed it?

Thank you for the appreciation...
I had posted it on the Face book Indian Flora group and ... had suggested a tentative ID..... further googling indicated a good likeness.
While posting it here too, I have requested for ID validation....hopefully it is N. zeylanica
I am not doubting the ID. Just trying to find out whether any character is visible in the images for confirmation. Achenes of both look similar to me. Facebook group doesn't appear to be that serious presently. Often I have seen 50% wrong IDs in the thread.

I saw this climber for the first time in CKBS, South24Pgs, in December 2013. ...
And this is my last upload for this fortnight. We have some more form the family, but distributed in other regions than the central Bengal.
Yes, Didi, 'Bengal Plants' lists it, Bengali name as ছাগলবাটি , but if you want to see this vine in CKBS you will have to get down into a ditch out there.
Same question. Any character by which you know that it is Naravelia achene rather than a clematis?
The KEY in 'Bengal Plants' goes-
(i) petals 0; petiole not produced as a tendril = Clematis
(ii) petals many; petiole produced as a temdril - Naravelia
Of-course the above KEY is based on the distribution in Greater Bengal, and none of the Clematis species listed in the book can be found in this region of Bengal. I didn't see the petals, but leaf tendril has been recorded in my earlier post - efi thread. Furthermore, Sir Prain explains, "petiole (in Clematis) sometimes twining but not produced as a tendril."
Yes but can you make it out here? Just a curiosity......
..., not in this thread certainly, but more pictures of the same individual can be viewed in an earlier thread, please check the 1st and 3rd pictures.

Naravelia zeylanica  (L.) DC.

Awesome! I also visited Vithiri (Wayanad) for 4 days during October and came across several plants you have posted. This is one among them.  This is an important medicinal plant. "Ceylon Clematis" used in Ayurveda. Brief info on its use :
It contains alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, etc.The aerial parts of Naravelia zeylanica traditionally used in vitiated vata, pitta, inflammation, skin diseases. Vine is crushed and inhaled to cure headache; fresh stems chewed in toothache; plant paste consumed with Borassus flabellifer for chest pain. Young leaves paste applied on skin diseases and ulcers, and on forehead for cold and headache; roots of Eranthemum palatiferum pounded with leaves of Naravelia zeylanica and applied to treat bone fracture. Crushed roots inhaled to cure cold and fever.
Some n A few names used in karnataka are: balluli hambu, charachara balli, naakchaikani, neendamalli

so a clematis with green succulent looking petals for a flower and leaves reminiscent of paan, peppers etc. never seen these. thanks ... for the case and thanks ... for the information.
