Among many names and their variants listed in ENVIS-FRLHT for Ardisia solanacea, I would like to get following validated:
I hope I have written the above two names correctly; thanks to A Telugu-English dictionary by Charles Philip Brown నేరేడు neredu (or నేరెడు neredu), though finds an entry in Brown's Dictionary for Ardisia humilis, (synonym of A. solanacea), it looks like being used as a generic name for plants bearing cherry or plum-like fruits. Thus using prefix like కాశి (Kaashi, Benares city) will separate it from అల్లోనేరేడు allo-neredu, భూతనేరేడు bhuta-neredu, జంబునేరేడు jambu-neredu. నక్కనేరేడు nakka-neredu, etc. you are perfectly correct in writing
In telugu it is called konda mamidi, adavi mayuri, and konda pogada also. కొండ మామిడి, అడవి మయూరి, కొండ పొగడ- it is also given in CRC world dictionary of medicinal plants. Pagadam means red coral in telugu, since the fruit is reddish and round like a coral it is called as Pogada mulaka. Kashi is another name of Varanassi/ Benaras, as all Indians know; but it indicates sacred in telugu, Many many thanks ... for the additional names, and the related information. There is another name similar to already listed by you (and in ENVIS-FRLHT) ... కొండమయూరము kondamayuramu mulaka in pogada mulaka refers to: ములక (p. 1010) mulaka. [Tel.] n. The plant called Solanum, or Nightshade. With other prefixes: నేలములక Solanum jacquini. తెల్లములక Solanum indicum Names of Plants in India :: Tamil names of Ardisia solanacea : 5 posts by 3 authors. Following Tamil names are mentioned at Biotik for Ardisia solanacea: மனிபுதம் (maniputam) and கோழிக்கோட்டை (kolikkottai) They are also listed at ENVIS-FRLHT: kozhikkottai, manipudbam / maniputpam, narikandam 1) Would மணிபுஷ்பம் (manipushpam) make better sense for மனிபுதம் (maniputam) / manipudbam / maniputpam ? 2) Does கோழிக்கோட்டை (koli-k-kottai) seem to make sense for A. solanacea ? Google text / image search does not display results related to plants at all. 3) narikandam, is a name shared by Aegiceras corniculatum with Ardisia solanacea. Would it rather be spelled as நாரிக்கண்டல் ? Forgot to mention this name: கோழுருச்சி kolurucci which appears in Wikipedia. Noticed that it appears in Wikipedia alone; hope it is valid ! 1) Would மணிபுஷ்பம் (manipushpam) make better sense for மனிபுதம் (maniputam) / manipudbam / maniputpam ? Yes! மணிபுஷ்பம் (manipushpam) (= bead flower or bell flower) must be the correct name. Manipudam or Maniputam do not make sense to me. 2) Does கோழிக்கோட்டை (koli-k-kottai) seem to make sense for A. solanacea ? Google text / image search does not display results related to plants at all. I am not sure but கோழிக்கோட்டை seem to be fine. The name 'kozhikotai' கோழிக்கொடை (= chicken's umbrella, referring to the shape of the flower) is also seem to be appropriate http://indiabiodiversity.org/species/show/7964. 3) narikandam, is a name shared by Aegiceras corniculatum with Ardisia solanacea. Would it rather be spelled as நாரிக்கண்டல் ? The Tamil name 'kandal' is generally applied to mangrove plants. So, I would retain the name 'narikandam' நாரிக்கண்டம் here based on the reference/s. The name கோழுருச்சி 'kolurucci' sounds legit, too. I came across Ardisia humilis for the first time in a jungle at Tezpur (Assam). I brought a sapling from there. The plant gave flowers and fruits for few years. Now I find the plant in some bamboo groves at this place. Attaching a collage of the same. Solanum look-alike flowers but NOT Solanum species ID PLEASE Garden Plant UD 001:2013: This plant was found growing in a friend’s garden in 2011 October… she did not know the name… this year its gone … so no further history as it developed. When I photographed it, it was about 3 feet tall, new leaves were emerging, looking fresh. Largest leaf was about 10– 12 cms long , no hairs on top or bottom. The main stem was an inch thick and just becoming woody, so I suspect this would have been a shrub if developed, or even a bush. Not a herb by any means. The flowers are vaguely reminiscent of the Solanum species but not really… flowers were 1.5 to 2 cms across , light pink somewhat fleshy petals. The berries at that point were green, about 4 – 6 mm round … with a little black point of a dot. It is Ardisia sp. of Myrsinaceae family, look like Ardisia littoralis Andr. Please check Thank you ... But the petals in a. littoralis are narrower than my example... come to think of it ... could it be ardisia solanacea, by any chance ??? Dont take my guess, but AWAITING ALL OF YOU to PITCH IN TOO!!! Please compare the description of plant; Ardisia littoralis Andr.: Erect branched shrub to 1.5 m tall. Leaves clustered towards the ends of the branches, 5-11 x 2.4-5 cm, obovate-oblong or elliptic, base cuneate, apex acute or subobtuse, coriaceous; petiole to 1 cm long. Inflorescence axillary or lateral umbels, rarely lengthened into racemes; peduncle 2-3 cm long. Flowers pink; pedicels 0.8-1.4 cm long, stout. Calyx 3-5 mm long; lobes elliptic, obtuse, with membranous margins, in fruit enlarged, orbicular, closely pressed to the berry. Corolla-lobes 5-7 mm long, obliquely ovate-acuminate, gland-dotted. Berry 5-7 mm across, dipressed globose, apiculate, red at first turning purplish black. Ardisia solanacea Roxb.: Trees, to 6 m high; bark brown, smooth. Leaves simple, alternate, estipulate; petiole to 10 mm long, stout, glabrous; lamina 10-18 x 4-6 cm, obovate, elliptic-obovate or oblanceolate, base cuneate, apex acuminate or acute, margin entire or obscurely crenate, glabrous, glaucous beneath, coriaceous, gland-dotted; lateral nerves 9-20 pairs, parallel, slender, obscure, secondary laterals faint, intercostae obscure. Flowers bisexual, 1.3 cm across, bright pink, in axillary or lateral umbels; peduncle 5-(12) cm long; bracts 1.5-2 mm long, concave, deciduous; calyx lobes 5, 3 x 1.5 mm, concave, ovate, obtuse, ciliate, persistent, leathery, twisted to right; corolla 2.5 cm across; lobes 5, twisted to right, in bud, 10 x 7 mm, ovate, coriaceous, punctate; stamens 5, connivent around style, exserted; filaments short; anthers sagitate, 7 mm; ovary superior, globose 3 x 2 mm, 1-celled, ovules many; style elongate, as long as the corolla lobes; stigma terminal. Fruit a berry 8 mm across, globose, bright red. Ardisia sonchifolia Mez.: Shrubs; branchlets gland-dotted. Leaves 10-22 x 4-6 cm, oblanceolate, acute to acuminate at apex, attenuate and auricled at base, entire; nerves ca. 16 pairs, strongly punctuate along the margins; petiole 5 mm long. Umbels terminal, 5 x 5 cm, tomentose, peduncled; pedicels 5-6 mm long, rusty-tomentose. Flowers 5-15 in an umbel, pale pink; sepals 3 x 1.5 mm, ovate, acute, hairy; corolla lobes 4 mm long, ovate, acute, punctate; anthers acute. Berry 6-7 mm across, pink, glabrous.
