Jalkumbhi, destroyig ponds in north India Sir, I agree with your comments. This weed has become a nuisance throught the world. But it is ultimately the humans who has propagated it by directly charging untreated waste/water or anything which can be thought off into water bodies/rivers etc. After doing so much of harm to the environment ourselves we cannot blame these natural beings of destroying anything. When humans can lay their hands on anything they desire in the name of development than we should also get an equal competition from the nature also. When human do excesses they should also expect the same, as the law goes “Everything has an equal & opposite reaction”. These are my views, please don’t take anything personal. Water Hyacinth: this lovely mauve flower of the water hyacinth was spotted today morning while birding in the Kalikapur wetlands of Kolkata. Flora of Panipat District- Eichhornia crassipes: Eichhornia crassipes English we call it Water hyacinth. This water plant is a dangerous weed which grows very quickly and difficult to remove once established. It also depletes the oxygen in the water endagering the fishes and other animals in the water body. First photo is not Water hyacinth it was here by mistake First one could be Alysicarpus Yes, it is dangerous weed. It infested the Kharun river near my city. Please see the degree of infestation. http://pankajoudhia.com/album/main.php?g2_itemId=9280 But living with this obnoxious weed the Traditional Healers have developed its new uses. Here is interesting document Traditional medicinal knowledge about a noxious weed, jal kumbhi (Eichhornia crassipes), in Chhattisgarh (India) http://ip.aaas.org/tekindex.nsf/2a9c4e44835b04ea85256a7200577a64/20f2945cb92c9a7d85256c4b004ffa4e/Body/M1?OpenElement There are some bio control agents to remove this Eichhornia. Some insects that feed exclusively on these plants. Read somewhere long back. Neochetina bruchii and other Neochetina are effective but in laboratory conditions only. Few years back the weed researchers declared that Parthenium can manage Water Hyacinth but later common people relaized that it was of academic interest only. The concerned researchers applied Parthenium extract on Water Hyacinth growing in small tub. It is not found feasible to apply Parthenium in bulk to manage this weed in ponds. Hence, after publishing the paper in reputed journal and receiving the award the researchers Never tried to move forward. In Kharun river it was very easy to use the mechanical control measure as two sides were parallel. In this measure two tractors are run in both sides of river and between them chain is kept across the river. It removes Water Hyacinth within few hours. But due to lack of political will, BJP and Congress continued fighting over this issue and finally flood in rainy season washed the issue i.e. Water Hyacinth. By the way please see this website selling furnitures prepared from Water Hyacinth. http://www.perfectpieces.co.nz/ More Pics from Village Madlouda (Panipat) Attaching images of what we call KOCHURI PANA in Bengali. Yes, ... This is the water hyacinth that is as beautiful as it is tiresome weedy growth... choking the waterways of the world... including India... roots give a safe heaven to all and sundry creatures including the mosquitoes larvae ... and makes waterways non-navigable and sweet water slow-moving rivers into stale water. Now a days at least in Bengal they have found use as a green fodder for cows .. a misguided effort since low quality milk is produced that in turn creates increased in- digestibility in people who drink it.... hope they have abandoned the idea BUT will never know since advent of the co-operative dairy culture all milk is mixed up and Nobody is responsible for good or bad milk.... SECONDLY ... dried Kachuri-pana plants are processed to yield fibres of sorts to make paper and decorative "Natural" coverings for book binding and gift boxes... and lampshades... insects love them and so I dont think this is going to last too long since the novelty would wear off and sales will plummet... this initial effort is grassroots based and hence low tech with glue that is used is rice starch based and the insects may also be attracted to that element... unless some high tech solution is found .. some continuities have taken to drying the plants and burning, using the ash to add to soil.. but this would turn out to be mistake when it would be found that very high toxic levels of heavy metals are concentrated in them.... Poor water hyacinth plant... what bad Karma produced it.... Thank you for all these info on water hyacinth. I would like to add that though are much publicized as weeds, to some animals they are useful too, a perfect hiding place for waterbirds, water monitor, and maybe a breeding / nesting ground to some, including mosquitoes.
