Polygonum plebeium is one of the most troublesome and morphologically variable species. In Flora of British India, Hooker hesitatingly described almost 11 forms of this species, some of which got escalated later to the species level. The plant is also confused very often with P. aviculare, P. cognatum and other species which are different.

This is really a very variable species.. number of flowers as well as hairlines of stem often confuses...

Could this be Polygonum plebeium ?
Agreed ... I am also agreed with Polygonum plebeium
You have shown an interesting plant.
Apparantly the thought that it can be Polygonaceae never appeared to my mind.
After reading the ID i checked your notes......... Habitat dry pond corresponds well.
I tried to check for the ochrea....... Yes I think they are there in last two pictures.
FOI says it is native. Is it correct or is it naturalised in India (Origin Australia) ?
... it is difficult for me to comment upon its origin. Now days due to heavy cold i have to shift my System on Ground floor and all hard copies of flora, soft copies in external storage devices are lying in upper room and many times i feel difficulty in checking all these floras etc. However i will try to find......

Polygonum? Hooghly 3/3/13 sk : 4 + 8 images. 9 posts by 4 authors.
I found this small prostrate-erect herb on the edge of a narrow drain beside a rural road.
I am sorry for very poor quality photographs, due to want of light.
Species : Unknown
H & H : small prostrate-erect herb; leaves alternate; inflorescence axillary fascicled
Date : 2/3/13
Place : Hooghly
Any chance of Polygonum effusum Meisn.?
May be Polygonum plebeium R.Br. though P.plebeium in our area has clearly pink flowers.
Thank you Sir for the very probable ID.

"Bengal Plants" keys in :- (Inflorescence in axillary clusters)

(i) Sepals all obtuse, short, broad; flowers hidden among stipules ------- plebeium
(ii) Sepals all obtuse, short, broad; flowers all or mostly pedicelled ------ plebeium var. effusa
(iii) Sepals all obtuse, narrow ------- plebeium var. micranthema
(iv) Sepals two outer acute; leaves 0.25 in. long or less ------- plebeium var. brevifolia
(v) Sepals two outer acute; leaves 0.5 in. long or longer ------- plebeium var. elegans

The photographs are so bad that i failed to come to any conclusion.
Thanks for this upload. To me too, this looks like a var. of Polygonum plebeium but definitely not P. effusum. I have seen P. effusum in field which has pedicellate flowers exerted from ochrea, obtuse tepals and spatulate leaves. Please check with the detailed description of other varieties of P. plebeium. which you have mentioned above. I will also search for some relevant literature and let you know.
Thank you very much for confirming that this is not P. effusum and at the same time suggesting that this could be a var. of P. plebeium.
In the field i missed the flower. Even i didn't think that it could be a Polygonum, because i missed the ochrea too!
Of the varieties described in this thread i am left with two options - 1) P. plebeium var. micranthema and 2) P. plebeium var. elegans
According to F. B. I. -
(i) var. micranthema : leaves 1/4 to 1/3 in., obtuse; flowers very minute pedicelled crowded in upper axils, pedicel often as long as the perianth......
(ii) var. elegans : leaves 1/2 to 2/3 in., acute or acuminate; flowers sessile or shortly pedicelled.....
According to Flora Indica - leaves of P. elegans are bifarious.
I am not sure if the leaves in this plant can be called bifarious.
So, i need to (1) revisit this plant and get some more clear shots and (2) search if there could be any other variety of P. plebeium, not described in the Bengal Plants.
eflora of China, eflora of Nepal as well as The Plant List does not mention any of these varieties.
Attaching new set of photographs (8 images) recorded today. The flowers are so small that better picture using my camera is nearly impossible.
Could this be Polygonum elegans Roxb. of Flora Indica

Polygonum plebeium----validation needed : 8 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (5)
Looks like Polygonum plebeium, though unsure of the first photo which was taken in June 16 while others were taken in Dec.16, different plants of course. Pictures taken at Aamby valley Rd., Lonavala, Pune.
I think appears close as per images at Polygonum plebeium
the first and other three are different; first looks like Polygonum plebium but others are not same
All seem to be Polygonum plebeium. The plant varies enormously according to soil and moisture conditions. The very same plant can look completely different just after monsoon and at the end of summer.
In some sources, including BSI Flora of Maharashtra we find 3 described varieties: var. plebeium, var. brevifolia and var. indica.

Please assist me identifying this herb..
I found this plant in Rajasthan (Barmer) near a seasonal water body area in association with Ammannia sps, Pulicaria crispa, Glinus lotoides, Marsilea

This looks like Polygonum pleibium...

This prostrate herb  was photographed at the top of "Chakdeo hill, Maharashtra" near marshy land.
Bot. name: Polygonum plebeium
Family: Polygonaceae
Is this the common form of Polygonum plebeium?
I am not able to make out if the variations in this plant are due to local site factors or if they are distinct species. For example some are more erect, or have smaller leaves or have larger numbers of flowers in the axils.
Please could ... comment on this?

You are very correct ... I  wish members would upload many pictures of the same during this fortnight so that we can observe the variations more closely.

is this Polygonum plebeium?  Please confirm
Thanks for this upload. To me this is Polygonum plebeium R.Br.
Following Flora of British India, this should be P. plebeium var. brevifolia.
Experts may comment.
Thank you ...,
The plant was in a low lying area of a fallow field in Thane dist. It was mixed with long grass and most stems were erect. The pics were taken in mid March 2014.
This is really a very variable species.. number of flowers as well as hairlines of stem often confuses...
Thanks for confirmation

This plant is completely prostrate. In another fallow field in Thane dist. The flowerless picture was taken on Dec 29th 2013 and the one with flowers on 8th Jan 2014.
It is still there now and it forms a mat on the surface of the soil. There are still a few flowers.
Yes, it is frequently available in the fields near Bangalore
The leaves appear longer than plants we see in Delhi.

Possibly Polygonum aviculare, photographed from Morni hills, pl. validate.
For me this is again P. pleibium..
Yes, it is P. plebium.
Achene characters and articulation on pedicel are the differentiating features between P. aviculare and P. plebeium! Not 100% sure but at first go, it looks like P. plebeium to me too.

Polygonaceae Fortnight- Polygonum pleibium from Panipat:: NS May 31: 3 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (7).
This prostrate and spreading herb is very frequent in waste places and fallow fields..
I hope this is Polygonum pleibium, I have observed two forms:
1. With cluster of flowers at nodes, internodes short, leaves 2-3 cm..
2. With few (1-2) flowers at nodes, internodes long, leaves 4-6 cm or more..
I am uploading them separately..
Beautiful photographs! Thanks for sharing!

help with identification : 5 posts by 3 authors. 2 images.
I am a student from USA studying weeds on farmers fields in Bihar and Uttrah Pradesh. I am trying to identify some of the weed species, and I was wondering if you could maybe help identify any of the weeds in the photos below.
More & larger pictures would have been better for proper Id.
The first photo is Polygonum plebeium and second one Majus.
One of the plant with pink flower photographs looks to me as Polygonum plebeium (family Polygonaceae). Please confirm.

Require identification of the tiny pink flowers.
Seen growing near the corners of Ranmal Lake, Jamnagar (Gujarat)
Date : 27th February 2015
Looks like Polygonum paronychioides
Thank you  Sir for the identification. A query...
FOI website says the plant grows at an altitude of 2700-4300m
http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Fuzzy%20Knotweed.html
Also Flora of Pakistan says the plant is "Very common in the dry inner zones, between 1200-4000 m"
http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=5&taxon_id=242100127
And Jamnagar has an altitude of 17m.
What possible ways could it have travelled this far?
efi page on Polygonum paronychioides
Flora of British India records "Polygonum paronychioides ............. Western Himalaya... alt. 8-12000 ft.,.... ."
This is Polygonum effusum Meisn., I think.
Thank You Sir! for the (attachment) paper on Polygonaceae family and clearing the doubts. The plant is Polygonum plebeium (var. effusum)

is this the ratan jot that some royal chefs used to use long ago  to give their curry a red tinge and have kept it a secret from the cooking experts and regular culinary schools etc

I am not very sure ... this plant too is used as greens.
रतनजोत ratanjot ... In literature, the vernacular name ratanjot is attributed to at least 15 plant species spanning four different families ... research paper.

I know. in some of the Ayurvedic traditional science classes i used to take, just to take my mind off the cancer patients plight in the western medicine model. we ran into this name RatanJot and some of the professors from BHU were guesting. they talked of many plants and their products called ratan jot. i perhaps have the list someplace in my notes and they also mentioned the deliberate confusion created. the story i told you above. so much for the royal chefs' ego!!! they also used it in meat dishes mainly and in hunting parties mainly. that perhaps explains why i have not found it mentioned in both my grandma's kitchen notes
Names update:
... plebeium VS plebejum :18 posts by 6 authors.
... plebejum seems to be a proper epithet. It is found in quite a few scientific names.
I assume Polygonum plebeium R.Br. and  Polygonum plebejum R.Br. are synonymous ... not sure whether there is any mistake in doing so.
Is one of them in Greek and other in Latin ?
They both mean same ... "common", and are even pronounced the same plebeium / plebejum.
Please throw some light on this close names.

Just because a name is found is MANY references, doesnt make it right.
Polygonum plebeium R.Br. is the name and there is no name called Polygonum plebejum R.Br.
Polygonum plebejum R.Br. was a mistake.
I assume its a case of copy paste. Some one made a mistake and others copied it without checking original name.
Now how to check original name when it was published for the first time.
Please check the image of the paper of the book where it was originally published in 1810.
Hope this helps.

There is no word plebejan or plebejum in online Cambridge dictionary.

you will perhaps need an old latin dictionary

As per David Gledhill's -The names of plants book- plebeius -a -um (plebejum) common, plebeius- from Greek (hence both are same)
Now I am adding etymology to all plants -it is in the process.
plebius -a -um veined,

Many thanks … I agree both mean same ... "common".
Can anyone give me an example of usage of both terms in Latin plant names?
One thing for sure, even if they mean same, the spelling must remain as it was in original publication.

Thanks … for your thoughts.
I too think the name Polygonum plebejum R.Br. must have been a mistake.
While putting the query, I had that feeling. But good number of sites showed up this name. I was wondering there could be some story behind this error.
I did not expect epithets to have gained entries in English dictionaries; In fact, I have never found in any search results until now for any genera / epithets.
I found plebejum is a proper epithet used in many other scientific names. Thus had become curious.
Sir can you please give me examples of some names?

Thanks very very much dear Pankaj for the time and efforts !! Thanks ....
Bit by bit towards स्वच्छ अंतरजाल अभियान !!!
To me, we have concluded this thread ... plebejum is incorrectly used in place of plebeium, practically in all cases of botanical names, and may be so in zoological too.
During this discussion, I found that - though only one of them is used as a valid epithet, both are otherwise valid words, having same meaning (common) and sound same - refer Dave's Botanary ... plebeium / plebejum.
