I strongly suspect it to be Polygonum barbatum. I require your help in identification of this variety of Polygonum. Do help me out with this identification.
Please check for Polygonum glabrum (Persicaria glabra).
I am also thinking that this could be P. glabrum. Please check the following; Nut biconvex- P glabrum Nut trigonous P. barbatum But, according to gamble, there might be biconvex nuts among trigonous nuts so check for the presence trigonous nuts in the fruiting inflorescence. It is interesting to note the Style of this plant :- These photos were shot on the bank of Hooghly river (The Ganges) in Chandannagore, Hooghly, on 22/02/2013. Please, also note that neither of the two pictures in my earlier post, is Persicaria glabra (Willd.) M.Gómez, because leaves of Persicaria (Polygonum) are alternate - Yes! Persicaria glabra from me too. Thanks for sharing ... Very good photographs. You have clearly shown a specific character of the family (Images DSCN 143 to 146). Ochrea, commonly spelled ocrea, is a structure formed of stipules fused into a sheath surrounding the stem. It is a diagnostic character in the Polygonaceae. Thanks for your comments ...! Would like to share that presence of ochrea is not characteristic to the whole Polygonaceae family rather specific to the subfamily Polygonoideae only. It is absent or rudimentary in members of the subfamily Eriogonoideae. Great ... I noticed a thing; shared on the group; and ultimately got more information. I am happy to be a member of this interactive forum with so many talented members who are ever ready to share so much. Even the Ice cream creeper Antigonon leptopus is said to be devoid of Ochrea I suppose. Yes Sir...you are very correct. More we share..more we learn! eFlora is a great learning experience for me too...and many thanks for taking this positively. Never noticed that Antigonon leptopus are devoid of ochrea. Fl. N. America mentions size of ochrea in the same plant as 0.2-2 mm. Thanks ... I know You are the expert in Polygonaceae. My sentence about Antipogon was based on some earlier discussion where ... has replied to one of my query related to the family. (Somehow I can't find that thread now...may be it was with my earlier mail ID) I checked your link too. It stimulated me to dig in further but couldn't find much. I think you only will come out with some conclusive statement related to Antigonon leptopus. You are also correct! Antigonon leptopus belongs to the subfamily Eriogonoideae. As stated earlier, ochrea in subfamily Eriogonoideae is either absent or rudimentary. Same is true for A. leptopus where ochrea is a very small (0.2-2mm) membranous structure that may not actually be well defined as 'ochrea'. Requesting you to have a close look on this herbarium sheet. You will find the answer. Polygonaceae Fortnight : Persicaria glabra : 2 posts by 2 authors.
