PLANT FOR ID 160 SMP NOV 2009 : Attachments (2). 12 posts by 5 authors.
For ID.
A small tree seen in Mahabaleshwar 8th Nov 2009.
Small white flowers, somewhat like Polygonaceae. Black fruits like Lantana.
Alternate leaves as seen in picture.

My first reaction was Persicaria chinensis. Is it really woody plant?
This is Polygonum auriculata. Have a look at following link..
Polygonum auriculata is synonym of Persicaria chinensis. It is good we thought similarly. I had seen this plant only once 15 years back. It is not tree but a perennial herb, sometimes climbing.
That's right ... It was not a tree. Some plants were small seen by road side, while one in our Hotel (Ramsukh) some drooping branches were observed.
Excellent pic for id. It very clearly shows the typical ocreae which are useful to id Polygonum (in the previous sense).
About the name:
As per Maharashtra Dicot II (BSI)
Persicaria auriculata (Meissn.) Dixit, Datta & Roy is current name
Polygonum auriculatum Meissn. is basionym
Polygonum chinense L. var. ovalifolium Meissn. (used by Cooke) is a synonym
Persicaria chinensis (L.) H. Gros var. ovalifolia (Meissn.) Hara is also a synonym (used in Flora of East. Himalaya)

Thanks for the information.
I had somehow missed the finding about ochrea.
(Description from family info: The leaves are stipulate and the stipules are characteristic of the family. They are usually membranous and forming a complete sheath(ochrea)
Thanks again for pointing me that.
Thanks ..., for detailed update
My data was based on FlowersofIndia website. It is nice that plant was identified and verfied fast and soon.
This thread is turning interesting
I just found out that Persicaria auriculata (Meissn.) S. K. Dixit, Datt & G. P. Roy, 1991 is nom. illeg. being a later homonym of Persicaria auriculata (Meisn.) Massam, 1934. So it can't be used as name for the taxon. I could not find any record of Persicaria chinensis var ovalifolia or Polygonum chinense var ovalifolium from IK, APNI or GCI through IPNI, and am not sure about its validity.
This is what I found from Annotated Checklist of Flowering Plants of Nepal
Persicaria chinensis var. ovalifolia (L.) H. Gross, ; Fl. E. Him. 71 (1966).
  • Coccoloba crispata Buch.-Ham. ex Roxb.
  • Polygonum auriculatum Meisn.
  • Polygonum chinense var. ovalifolium Meisn.
  • So if at all our taxon is distinct accepted name should be Persicaria chinensis var. ovalifolia (L.) Gross.
  • Interesting indeed. Not the first time that BSI nomenclature has provided food for thought and discussion.
Let's wait for others to comment. Can someone give details from Flora of Maharashtra by Almeida sir? He, being an expert in nomenclature, must have discussed this controversy to some extent.

'Polygonum auriculata' is called 'Paral' 'परळ' in Marathi.

Kindly identify this Persicaria species. I have forgotten the dimensions of leaves. Flowers and fruits 4-7 mm. Photographed at the Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary growing untended, in Jan 2014.

    Some Aconogonum  sp. ???

Koenigia (Aconogonum) species in eFloraofindia (with details/ keys from published papers/ regional floras/ FRLHT/ FOI/ Biotik/ efloras/ books etc., where ever available on net)

I tried all Polygonaceae but did not find a match.
Is the another  post from Soureni also same ?

Is it too Persicaria chinensis (L.) H. Gross  ??
Yes this is Persicaria chinense var. ovalifolia (Meisn.) H. Hara. One may get confused with other species of Persicaria because of its broadly ovate bracts which are prominently visible here at the terminal ends. This species is highly polymorphic and is represented by four varieties.
