Jan.Ammal; Saccharum klaga (Jungh.) Steud.; Saccharum lota Buch.-Ham. ex Wall.; Saccharum propinquum Steud.; Saccharum semidecumbens Roxb.; Saccharum speciosissimum Tausch; Saccharum spontaneum var. arenicola (Ohwi) Ohwi ........; Saccharum stenophyllum Buse; Saccharum tenuis Buch.-Ham. ex Wall.; Tricholaena semidecumbens (Roxb.) Schult.);

Kans grass, serio grass, wild cane, wild sugarcane, कांस Kaans (Hindi), Pekkarimpu (Tamil), Kaki ceruku (Telugu), Kamis (Marathi), Kansh (Bengali), Kadu kabbu (Kannada), Nannana (Malayalam), Kansado (Gujarati);

The racemes of S.spontaneum are simple and unbranched, whereas S.bengalense has branched racemes looking like a panicle. S.spontaneum has silvery white inflorescence whereas S.bengalense has pinkish inflorescence turning white later on. S.spontaneum has a running growth whereas S.bengalense are found in thick clumps.

Saccharum ravennae has become rather rare nowadays may be due to filling up of terai grasslands and expansion of roads. It is a very tall grass and can be identified by the small awn projecting out of the spikelet in addition to the hairs. It has decompound panicles (branched and rebranched) whereas S.spontaneum has unbranched panicle branches almost like a raceme. The leaves of Saccharum ravennae are also broader. The panicles are purplish in S.r and silvery in S.spontaneum.

VALMIKI : OBSERVER OF NATURE 48:  Here is the 48th member of the series. It is mentioned as KASH by Valmiki. Scientifically it is known as Saccharum spontaneum. This is the time for Kash to bloom. All Bangalis are familiar with KASH PHUL, as it is associated with Durga Puja. The flowers of Kash have been immortalised by Satyajit Ray in his Pather Panchali.
we almost have no kas phool inside city limits of kolkata... not even near the babu ghat and pricep ghat where we saw a few stands a few years ago... now one has to take the train or highway to go in search of kush ghash... our symbol that Ma is coming... is rare... Ma comes with kash phul only on some dhaki's dhak' adornment...s..

grass Saccharum spontaneum L. from Hooghly:
I hope there is no other grass like this.
Species : Saccharum spontaneum L.
Bengali Name : KAASH
H & H : common grass in waste land, low land; height varies greatly from 4 feet to 7 feet or more; do not have other statistics
Date : 29/9/11, 26/11/11, 8/9/12
Place : Hooghly
Nice pictures ... yes no other grass is like this....the culms were used by us in primary school days as "Kalams"...nice pictures...
Kuus ghash?
This is KAASH or KESHE, very common in lowland and waste land, some attaining 15 feet height.
KUUS ghas is Desmostachya bipinnata Staff., i am yet to find one.
The best pic, of my collection, that I took during my stay at Kanha.
One is enroute to Bumnidadar (the bunch of grass) adn other is near a water body (with Indian Gaur drinking water in Nallah).
Thank you very much, would loved a larger image, specially with the Gaur.
Please find attached the requested pics. I am sorry for large size image.
Lovely photographs. Evening sun's golden colour is very much captivating.
thanks for correcting me
I meant Kaas phul/ghass..... and mistakenly typed Kuus ghas...
there were large stands Kaas phul all over the eastern calcutta wetlands, by the pricep ghat along the ganges and on the way to the airport.. but new roads, beautification???, and thousands of apartment complexes with their artifical looking plantings have taken a toll ... Kaas phul is one such... In Calcutta proper no stands are to be seen, I saw one coming up near Princep ghat and before it flowered highway beautification folks beautified the little island of green inder the ramp that goes to the new bridge... now a days I have to drive all the way on national highways towards Haldia to see some ...
Kuus ghas grows abundantly by the ponds in shibpur botanical garden ... I had found many stands a couple of years ago by the roadside side of Prain lake in area 22 on the colorful map I had sent you a while back... not far from the bot gaachh.. and area 19 ...
but if you dont have it handy, I am enclosing it again...
Thank you for showing such a nice stand... Kaas phul elo bole, pujo elo...

Saccharum of Kanha: The present Kanha meadows, were once the villages inside the core of Tiger reserve. The relocation of those villages paved way for the plantation of these huge grassland landscapes. The perfect habitat to see Barasinghas, Indian Gaur and at occasions the Royal Bengal Tiger.

In this pic : Saccharum bengalensis (top) & Saccharum spontaneum (bottom)
I stand corrected that these grasslands were not planted but already existed before.
The upper one is Narenga porphyrocoma (Saccharum narenga).
Here is a picture of Saccharum spontaneum from Bandhavgarh.

Species : UNKNOWN
H & H : more than 5 ft high
Date 29/12/12
Place : Hooghly
It rather looks like Miscanthus sinensis.

Saccharum spontaneum
This is Saccharum spontaneum, i guessed it earlier, specially after i received the ID in another post, recorded elsewhere - https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups=#!topic/indiantreepix/oDo3UlqUYKg.
Yet, i wanted to be confirmed once again, because this is very strange that Saccharum spontaneum looks quite different in off season!

Type: Lectotype - Herb. Linn. No. 77.4 (LINN)

This is too commonly found in Bengal
Saccharum spontaneum as per another thread.
This is Saccharum spontaneum.

¿ Saccharum spontaneum ?
Dear friends,
Poor quality photos while the sun is setting, and to top it - they are of grass !!
Guessing it may be Saccharum spontaneum. The small colonies were seen in a few spots in the park, in vicinity of a small stream.

To me also appear close to images at Saccharum spontaneum

pictures taken at aambyvalley rd., off lonavala, pune in nov. 2017.
wonderful. they have almost disappeared from the greens inside kolkata, in sprawling countryside, and along the hooghly river in the metropolitan areas. cement jungle has sprouted. and a few stands outside are well guarded secrets now.
Yes to me also appears close to Saccharum spontaneum as per images, details and keys herein.
Yes it is.
