The racemes of S.spontaneum are simple and unbranched, whereas S.bengalense has branched racemes looking like a panicle. S.spontaneum has silvery white inflorescence whereas S.bengalense has pinkish inflorescence turning white later on. S.spontaneum has a running growth whereas S.bengalense are found in thick clumps. Saccharum ravennae has become rather rare nowadays may be due to filling up of terai grasslands and expansion of roads. It is a very tall grass and can be identified by the small awn projecting out of the spikelet in addition to the hairs. It has decompound panicles (branched and rebranched) whereas S.spontaneum has unbranched panicle branches almost like a raceme. The leaves of Saccharum ravennae are also broader. The panicles are purplish in S.r and silvery in S.spontaneum.

we almost have no kas phool inside city limits of kolkata... not even near the babu ghat and pricep ghat where we saw a few stands a few years ago... now one has to take the train or highway to go in search of kush ghash... our symbol that Ma is coming... is rare... Evening sun's golden colour is very much captivating. thanks for correcting me I meant Kaas phul/ghass..... and mistakenly typed Kuus ghas... there were large stands Kaas phul all over the eastern calcutta wetlands, by the pricep ghat along the ganges and on the way to the airport.. but new roads, beautification???, and thousands of apartment complexes with their artifical looking plantings have taken a toll ... Kaas phul is one such... In Calcutta proper no stands are to be seen, I saw one coming up near Princep ghat and before it flowered highway beautification folks beautified the little island of green inder the ramp that goes to the new bridge... now a days I have to drive all the way on national highways towards Haldia to see some ... Kuus ghas grows abundantly by the ponds in shibpur botanical garden ... I had found many stands a couple of years ago by the roadside side of Prain lake in area 22 on the colorful map I had sent you a while back... not far from the bot gaachh.. and area 19 ... but if you dont have it handy, I am enclosing it again... The upper one is Narenga porphyrocoma (Saccharum narenga).
