Averrhoa carambola from Trivandrum city:
Averrhoa carambola (Family: Oxalidaceae) from Trivandrum city.
Photographed on 23rd and 25th April 2012.
Commonly known as star fruit, its fruits are edible.
Native to Southeast Asia and Indian sub-continent.
Thank you ... for sharing... beautiful... drooling, KAMRANGA in Bengali, never seen this plant.
... just come over to the Agri Horticulture garden in Alipore, there is at least one big one and a smaller one ... the big one is in edge of the parking lot ... and a relatively younger one (even that is about 30 years old) on the north side of the office door where the cashiers sit... you can even sample the fruit if the gardeners are removing them for cleaning purposes...

A slow growing small tropical tree, no more than 25 feet tall, originally from Southeast Asia (Indonesia).
The green leaflets are sensitive to light and fold inward at night. It has small, pink colored flowers with a dark-red heart. The carambola plant will flower and fruit four times yearly. This tropical fruit, fleshy five lobbed, ovate to elliptoid, is attractive yellow-orange and pleasantly aromatic! The tree flowers and bears fruit almost year-round. When sliced in cross section a perfect star is formed.
Carambola is eaten fresh or in fruit salads. The carambola tree seems to be used for bonsai.
Ref. Flowers of India
Its flowering now in Lalbagh and also in Cubbon park
I saw one fruit in Lalbagh last week

It's interesting to note the id key of this genus in FoP & FoC.
Averrhoa carambola
Family : Oxalidaceae
You have picked up the fruits which are edible slightly sour in taste.
The flowers are beautiful too. Flower shape is similar to other Oxalidaceae members like Oxalis.
Yes, Satish Sir, i have eaten a fruit that day, after a long time! But didn't see flowers yet.
I have a grafted tree growing in a container. It gets fruits twice in a year. Here are the photos.
Wonderful ..., if i could had some! I have heard that there is a sweet cultivated variety of this tree, would like to taste that one too!

This one was shot from Tau Devi Lal Herbal Park, Yamunanagar (Haryana)... Averrhoa carambola L.

Thanks ... for complete set of pictures, as always..

Common name: Carambola, Star fruit
Bot. name: Averrhoa carambola
Family: Oxalidaceae
Fruits are edible.
Beautiful! The fruits were for sale outside the VJ garden in Mumbai last year

Averrhoa carambola: On Pongal Day in 2009, I plucked more than 10 Kgs of starfruit from the tree I had planted 30 or so years ago. This year we got barely a handful but every day (in the season) there were half-eaten tiny fruit lying under the tree. Last week I managed to catch the thief  in the act of plunder, though only on film.
There were two of them quietly hopping around and munching away. I only noticed them because I was standing under the tree getting some leaves composted and saw the half-eaten fruit fall down. There was no sound until they screeched and flew away together after their breakfast.
-  Rose-ringed Parakeets [the female is featured here] eat only the seeds and discard the fleshy pulp.
- My potted Carambola tree flowered and now there are fruits.
- So that was why I saw so much fruit wasted on the driveway, is it? Do they discard the flesh of all fruits or only of the carambola since it is sour?  The male was also there but not easily visible to my camera. I presume it was her mate as they suddenly  flew off together,  screeching raucously.
- My elderly aunt (90 years ) has suggested I tie a tin with a striker and get someone to sound the makeshift bell on and off to scare away the birds. I must see whether there are any fruit left to justify the effort.  There are so many tiny fruit on the ground, which are sure not to have formed seeds by then. The way the fruit is wasted is a shame, though I can see the point of view of the gourmet parakeet too.
- They do the same with Guavas [and also with chillies/ red peppers].

07/05/2011/YRP/01/Naoroz Estate, Chethalayam, Wayanad.: some pictures of flowers (3mm in diameter), fruits and leaves of Averrhoa carambola (Star fruit). Normally sour, but at our place juicy and sweet.
Date & Time 07/05/2011
Location: Place, Altitude, GPS  Chethalayam, Wayanad.
Habitat: Garden, Urban, Wild Type:      Garden.
Plant Habit: Tree, Shrub, Climber, Herb Tree.
Height, Length. 15 ft.

Averrhoa carambola, Family Averrhoaceae

Two cultivars (though not formally recognised) of this species are well known
    Sour type: the smaller, very sour type, richly flavored, with more oxalic acid (nearly 1 %);
Sweet type:  the larger, mild-flavored, rather bland, with less oxalic acid (nearly 0.4 %), lighter and more yellower in colour.
One website, however, write that sour fruits are larger about 5 inch long, whereas sweet ones shorter, about 3 inch long. Perhaps you may know more about this.

The fruits on my plant are large some as large as 4" in length, I think we can conclude that the sweeter ones are large.
This is one of my favorite fruits. I like to eat this fruit with salt and chilli powder sprinkled on it.  I have a small tree growing in a pot and last year it gave many fruits.
I enjoy it too. We have around 4 such trees and they produce plenty of fruits. Chethalayam being the place it is, it has no commercial value. I enjoy it, one more reason I like it is because it has plenty of fibres. My friends enjoy it, so do my birds and my cows. They are found underneath the tree as soon as it starts ripening. It grows very fast from seeds and soon there will be plenty of plants.
I tasted it for the first time recently this year and I liked it. I think there is a need to vist your garden and try tasting all edibles ones.... It would certainly be a great experience for me.
You are welcome any time. Only, it is a wild garden. You will be surprised how many so called weeds could be eaten. Another drawback, you can not go out in the night due to elephants. Otherwise, it is very close to the original garden of Eden.
Sweet Carambola is found in Assam also. It is very tasty and I eat it without any salt.
Unfortunately, the ones I have in my home garden bears fruits which grows up to 4 inches but are decidedly sour.
nice photos of  flowers and fruits. Mine is growing in a small pot.  It is sweet when ripe and yellowish and my son enjoys the fruit with some salt. Last month it flowers and fruited. I am sending some photos of the previous fruits.
It is amazing how you grow it on the balcony of a highrise building.
Please be careful it does not send roots into small crevices in the building.
