Zeuxine longilabris (Lindl.) Benth. ex Hook.f.: attaching the image of Zeuxine longilabris (Lindl.) Benth. ex Hook.f.
- Yes this is Zeuxine longilabris

very widely distributed in India. Recently happened to see this at Trivandrum but in garden in flowering and then from ... also. Apart from India, it is also found in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Myanmar and Thailand. This is also the right time to search in Maharastra. Its there in wild.
I will request members who share orchid pics, PLEASE DONT FORGET TO TAKE PICTURES OF LEAVES. In the current pic also if you notice, in top bud has no labellum and it gives an indication of another (more than one) species.
- The only orchid that was seen growing wild in fields in Delhi Zeuxine strateumatica, not seen for last 30 years.
- This plant is collected from Wayanad district of Kerala, Actually I forgot the date of Collection. I will let you know the details soon. Anyway, I had collected this plant and photogrphed from many parts of Wayanad and also from Kozhikode (Calicut) district. I think I had encountered another species from Wayanad. That is Z. gracilis.
- Another pic of Zeuxine longilabris. I had got this id'd thro efloraofinadia. Pic taken at Thattekkad,Kerala mid-Dec 2009

Zeuxine sp.: this orchid was collected from Malkangiri near Chitrakonda. Please validate the ID.
Name of the species: Zeuxine longilabris (Lindl.) Benth. ex. J.D. Hook
Area of collection:Chitrakonda, malkangiri, Orissa
Habitat: Under moist canopy with leaf litters
Altitude:500m above msl
Sir J.D.Hooker is abbreviated as Hook.f. and not J.D.Hook. which Dr. Sarat Misra has done in his famous book on Orchids of Orissa. This goes according to the ICBN Vienna Code Section III, Article 46, Recommendation 46A, Note 1.

The Code also says the following reference should be followed while abbreviating:
R. K. Brummitt and C. E. Powell, ed (1992). Authors of Plant Names: A List of Authors of Scientific Names of Plants, with Recommended Standard Forms of Their Names, Including Abbreviations.

Many of such abbreviations are available at IPNI as well as Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_botanists_by_author_abbreviation

Just for example in my species, the plant is to be cited as Kumar and not as P.Kumar!!
Ask me why?
Because, P.Kumar stands for another person according to IPNI.

Atleast we botanist should follow it. Or, dont give author citations or, give full author names. Please take this in good spirits.

Secondly, your plant does look like longilabris but there is a very peculiar difference. Usually in Z. longilabris the lip tip is not so rounded as it is in your plant, it is very much trapezoidal in shape with crenulate or dentate. I will recheck once I am back to Doon. Zeuxine are identfied very much on the basis of the lip or glands inside the spur which is not visible in the pic.
Please find my pic attached.

Z.longilabris
You are actually missing something here.
There are two more species found in Orissa, namely, Zeuxine nervosa and Zeuxine affinis along with Z. strateumatica, lindleyana, gracilis.
Then grandis should also be there though not reported till now.
Would it be Z.affinis
Yes dear .., thats why I am confused too...:)
This species is obviously Zeuxine longilabris and already reported (recently) from Orissa.

Zeuxine longilabris with spider:

sharing picture of Zeuxine longilabris .. every flower is having spider so i thought it must be pollinator
here is our expert ... answer... thanks to ... always prompt reply.. learning lot from u
These are crab spiders. They are ambush spiders who camouflage inside the flower and when a pollinator or other insect comes, these spider attack them. I am not sure they are pollinators unless someone gives me a proof.
Beautiful pic.... thanks so much for sharing. You may share the same on eflora along with my reply.

Nice picture. Should have shared as the flora pic of the year.
By the way, one more thing to add!! Seems you were on the right time when the flower was in full bloom (bloom means when the flowers is sexually most active). During this period the flower attracts more
insects. These spiders know when insect will visit the flower and hence they reach the flower on time and wait for their meal.

My pic of this beautiful, inconspicuous orchid - which made it to Google.... Please check here;
