Spathoglottis plicata Blume (Orchidaceae) It is a species of terrestrial orchid found from tropical and subtropical Asia to the western Pacific including Hawaiʻi, Tonga and Samoa. It is commonly known as the Philippine Orchid, Philippine Ground Orchid, or Large Purple Orchid. Requesting to please ID this orchid captured at a nursery in Lonavala near Pune in Aug 2013. DSC09011.JPG is like Spathoglottis plicata Thanks ... for the ID....and I thought both the pics belonged to the same plant..... Here is an orchid from Great Nicobar Island, 34km on North-South Road, edges of evergreen forest, at low altitude. That time in 1984 digital camera was not available. Dr. J. Jayanthi, Scientist - D, BSI, Pune told me that it is Spathoglottis plicata. It is my pleasure to share a few images of Spathoglottis plicata (Orchidaceae) Habit: Terrestrial Habitat: Cultivated, Ornamental Sighting: Tumkur, Home garden, about 800 msl Date: 21-07-2014, 4-08-2014, 5-08-2014 and 6-09-2014 I am not sure if this is hybrid or a normal plicata, because the flwoers are supposed to be facing towards front in Spathoglottis plicata. Usha mam, the first pic is of the fruit that has already dehisched and spread the seeds... thanks ... even green fruits open up to release seeds. would those seeds be ripe? In orchids if the fruits open, then for sure seeds are ripe. One thing about orchid seeds are, they dont have any reserved food as they have no endosperm and they are dispersed by wind as they are super light in weight. Seeds may take some time to germinate, but they are always ripe. You cant compare it with peas. The two big cotyledons in these seeds are actually the food reserve which provides nurition to the embryo to germinate, because you actually open the unripe peas or beans because they are soft and in that stage they cant be planted (usually). You dont usually wait for the beans to ripe to eat, because they are too hard to cook by that time. yes logical idea.. about opening pods to eat at will. would both be unripe... correct and dispersal of orchid seeds info: an eye opener. will look it up and No endosperm.... is that why they need compatible fungi to grow with? Yes orchid seeds as they lack their own food, they need food from secondary sources so they need fungi. 1. Fungi is very much specific of the habitat where they grow. 2. Orchid is very much specific of the fungi they link with and ofcourse they are specific to habitat too. So orchids are kind of more picky in choosing where to grow and hence they are not so common in occurence in comparision to other plants. So to cope with this issue, orchids produces millions of seeds in each capsule but the survival rate is very low in wild. But please remember one plant if produces 1 fruit in an year and 1 fruit gives millions of seeds and only 5 survives and grow to adult.... ITS PERFECTLY FINE FOR ORCHIDS, as there is an increase in population and that is what each species in the world wants.....TO REPRODUCE !!!
