RHYNCHOSTYLIS RETUSA: At this time of the year, we have Rhynchostylis retusa (a common orchid of this place) in plenty. You must be knowing, in Assam girls decorate their hair with this orchid, in BIHU dance (in their language the flower is known as KOPOP PHUL). Attaching an image of this beautiful orchid.
- I have documented information about Traditional Formulations in which this orchid is added as important ingredient. Many of these formulations are used in treatment of Sickle Cell Anaemia.
You can find my pictures of this orchid in coming parts of this series.

Rhynchostylis retusa :: ghoge gava in Nepali:  How would the name ghoge gava for Rhynchostylis retusa, be spelt in Nepali ... घोगे गावा ?
The name is put at
eFlora<http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=110&taxon_id=200028817>-
Annotated Checklist of the Flowering Plants of Nepal.
Today one of my Nepali friends informed that Rhynchostylis retusa is popularly known as सुनाखरी (Sunakhari) in Nepal. He was not aware of the name Ghoge Gava.

Many thanks ... for the possible name सुनाखरी for Rhynchostylis retusa.
I find it on a page of Wikipedia ... ..., requesting you to validate whether सुनाखरी is a valid name for Rhynchostylis retusa.
I have already noted the name घोगे गावा ghoge gava listed at Annotated Checklist of the Flowering Plants of Nepal, and also put on your flickr photopage.

सुनाखरी is the general name for all orchids whereas घोगे गावा Ghoge Gaavaa / थुर Thur is the specific name for R. retusa.

Rhynchostylis retusa :: State Flower of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh: Rhynchostylis retusa is the State Flower of two states in India, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
কপৌ-ফুল kopou phool is its name in Assamese.
Failed to find any mention of its local name in Arunachal Pradesh ...
perhaps because there are too many languages prevalent there.
Yet will be glad to know of any common name (other than foxtail orchid).
For instance, sita pushpa, draupadi pushpa are mentioned in web pages related to orchids of the state, though not clearly.

Arunachal Pradesh is blessed with a cultural diversity of more than 30 major tribes and most of them are also good at speaking Assamese language. Most of the times, its a connecting language between people
belonging from two different communities.
The most popular name for Rhynchostylis retusa in Arunachal is Kopou phool only. However, there are many other local names used by different indigenous communities.

Orchids on Orchid: Was at my farm at Shahapur during the Diwali holidays. Baby orchids [presumably also Fox-tail orchids] were sprouting on the epiphytic roots of a large Fox-tail [Rhychostylis retusa] orchid. Sending a few photographs.
Wow, thats an interesting observation. Those plantlets are so small yet they have such thick roots...
That's an interesting observation and you are lucky to have a farm where these guys grow naturally.

Please help in the ID of this epiphytic orchid photographed from Bhimtal in Uttarakhand in April
This is a Rhynchostylis retusa. Please note the retuse leaf apex.
Thanks a lot .... Now I can ay I have several identified orchids
Ofcourse there is no doubt about it sir.
I will suggest you to pick this Spiranthes thing and do a comprehensive study. If you can find both hairy and non hairy plant then you can prepare a comprehensive descriptive analysis of both. It can be published too.
Thanks a lot ... I will keep a track of it in future visits to hills.

this plant is reported from Haryana Siwaliks, I have not been lucky enough to see this till now..
Excellent habitat pics... It shows that the plant grows in open areas more luxuriantly than in the dense forests.

Rhynchostylis retusa (Orchidaceae)
They bloom on an axillary pendant to 60 cm (24 in) long, racemose, densely flowered, cylindrical inflorescence that occurs in the winter and early spring.
In Assam, it is popularly known as Kopou Phool, and is an integral part of a Bihu dancer's attire. Among the youths, this orchid is regarded as symbol of love. This orchid also acts as a symbol of fertility and merriment. The inflorescence is also used in the marriage ceremony of the local people.
Considering the importance of this orchid, it is usually seen under cultivation in almost all Assameese families and its the state flower of Assam. This is also called Foxtail Orchid.
Pictures are taken near Jorhat, Assam, India during April, 2006.

More epiphytic orchids (Andaman Islands): Photos from 2011-01-08 shows a monopodial orchid, probably a Vanda from Elephant Beach, Havelock Island, Andamans Islands. I know it is impossible to ID Vandas without flowers but number of species might be limited, so does anyone know this one?
This doesnt look like Vanda to me. I need to check atleast fruit of dry floral stalks.
If I had to guess then looking at the broad and dense leaves and leaf apex, I could have gone for Rhynchostylis retusa. But not even 50% sure of it.
I will have to check what species are there. I am at Delhi for few days. Cant access much informations from net.
There is only one species of Vanda (Vanda teres + Papilionanthe teres) has been recorded from A & N Islands. The plant looks to me lie Aerides emericii if not Rhynchostylis retusa.
This could be Aerides emericii but can you please tell him to have a look at the leaf apex, which is more retuse and has more than 2 points. I assume Aerides emericii will have only two pointed lobes. But I have never seen this plant in real.
This is again Rhyncostylis retusa. Very evident from the leaf apex which is retuse.

Odia name of Rhynchostylis retusa : 5 posts by 3 authors.
Please help me with the Odia name pumam in native script.
Earlier reference to some Ethnobotanical Leaflets is now bad, however here is one link to a book Medicinal Orchids of Asia by Eng Soon Teoh - it me shows the Odia name listed.

in the referred book (link to a book Medicinal Orchids of Asia by Eng Soon Teoh -) Rhynchostylis retusa has been said to be banda or Rasna. But in Ayurveda an orchid Vanda roxburghii is taken as rasna and also called locally as bandaa,

Phansad - Growth on mango branch. : 7 posts by 5 authors. Attachments (1)
Can someone please help me id this growth on a mango branch.
... me thinks Acampe praemorsa, wild orchid.
more likely to be Aerides maculosum
... hope we get to see the flowers, Ruh (anytime now on -- April to August)  ... I am eager to know the ID.
Come to my place in Wynad anytime during the monsoon and you will see these flowers.
I cant reach anywhere on this with this picture. But if it would have
been Aerides, then the pendulous dry floral stalks would have been
present of previous year.
This can be Acampe but cant be sure.
I think this is not Acampe but Rhynchostylis.... Can't be confirmed from this pic.
This should be Rhynchostylis retusa
