of the very rare Orchid for Orissa, which i had phtographed from Karlapat Wildlife Sanctuary, Orissa.
Name of the species: Pecteilis gigantea
Place of collection: Karlapat Wildlife sanctuary, Kalahandi, South Orissa
Altitude: 3000 ft above msl
Habit: Herb
Habitat: On top plateau with deposits of Bauxite and also in grasslands of mountain top.
Uses: The tubers are used by the tribal for medicine and also by the herbivores as their favorite food (Wild bores)
You are absolutely right. With almost 3000 species of plants (Angiosperms, Gymnosperms, Pteridophytes) and many many unexplored lower plants, Orissa is still under explored with its full potential. Now the mineral deposits in those floral hot spots are posing sever threat of habitat loss for many rare, endangered, threatened and endemic species.
Strangely I couldnt find this in Jharkhand though it has to be there.
But I found Pecteilis triflora, which Dr. Misra couldnt find in Orissa :)).

Waghchora flowering and a tragedy: Was at my property at Shahapur on Wednesday last week. A specimen of Waghchora [Pecteilis gigantea] was ready to flower [Photograph 8]. It stood over 5 feet tall [right of centre in Photograph 7] totally dwarfing two 30 inch Habenaria commelinifolia ground orchids [left front & rear].
Was hoping to photograph it flowering yesterday, but unfortunately it was stolen along with many sprigs of Glory Lily possibly as offerings for the local Ganpati celebrarions.
The only saving grace was that a 42 inch specimen [Photographs 1 to 6] was spared.
Some of my previous photographs are available at these links

Nice photos, and lucky to get at least this pair of beauties.
nice pictures...
BUT I share your disappointment.. and I have written about this, including here in eflora...
one that I remember most is this thread where ... had shown a tree in Bangalore..
the thread title was
Request Tree ID 091 - lalbagh, Bangalore - RA
=
I ask the marauding masses in my neighborhood if their God is happy that he or she is being worshiped with flowers stolen from a neighbor who is now unhappy? dont these flowers carry unhappy vibrations?
there is no ethic about non-stealing of flowers in our land that prides itself in worshipping Gods for goodwill and blessings.. and the idea that they are inflicting pain to me and my trees/plants does come in their head... or civic sense...

its my pet peeve nowadays...

ORCHIDACEAE: Pecteilis gigantea near Pune
: Attachments (1). 8 posts by 8 authors.
Largest, most beautiful and fragrant ground orchid presently in flowering in western ghats. This plant can be traced from its fragrance which spreads to several meters distance.
Local name is Waghchoura on account of its dissected lateral lobes of lip looking like whiskers of Tiger.
The size of flowers is also imposing.
Large tubers of this plant are dug out by wild boars which is major natural set back to this rare plant besides collection by greedy humans.
Elegant plant and a great pic :)
Wonderful ...! I loved the fact about the Tiger's whiskers!

Very strange to see this flowering now. Pecteilis gigantea.
Thanks a lot for sharing.
I see it was flowering in late September, which is also strange time...
Flowering was in September which I have mentioned. By the way what is the distinct characteristics to distinguish it from P. sussanne ??
September too is late.
Pecteilis gigantea (Sm.) Raf.
FoI says Sept-Nov. ! No mention in ACFPoN !
Look at the petals of both and you will know. gigantea has much longer petals; susannae has small shorter petals, very tiny.
Gigantea as the name suggests is tall, can even go up to 4feet but this cant be an identifying character. If you feed susannae, it can grow taller too.
Thank you ...! This plant was about less than 2 ft.
A new born baby is 1 feet but when he becomes dad, he is almost 5 feet (in normal condition). So height is not a true basis of differentiation.
Ok, thanks. Almost our height 😂!
also seems it got eaten up
Yes, slightly !
