Habenaria gibsonii Blatt. & McCann ; Leafy Habenaria • Marathi: उग्र हबॆअमरी Ugra Habe-amri; Kew treats this as synonym of Habenaria foliosa but I truly believe that its Habenaria gibsoni a distinct species.
Habenaria foliosa: Habenaria foliosa At Kanakeshwar, Alibag Though Kew considers Habenaria gibsonii and foliosa as conspecific, I think they are different. Even gibsonii has two varieties. They both smell very differently. have long been confused with this. But to me this plant looks very much like Habenaria gibsonii. I am in delhi right now. Will try to dig more and find out the different between two. I assume difference lies in the flower especially in the lobes of lateral petals. Please do try to smell it and let me know the fragrance. Sending the photographs of foliage
Please check the smell to confirm if this is gibsoni var. foetida or gibsoni var. gibsoni. VOF Week: Habenaria sp.?? (Orchid) en-route Joshimath: Seen this erect herb en-route Joshimath. Syn name Habenaria gibsonii Hook.f; Habenaria digitata var. gibsonii (Hook.f.) C.E.C.Fisch; Habenaria gibsonii var. foetida Blatt. & McCann; Habenaria foliosa var. foetida (Blatt. & McCann) Bennet; Habenaria foliosa var. gibsonii (Hook.f.) Bennet. This synonymy is perfectly wrong. Habenaria foliosa is a different plant Habenaria gibsonii var gibsonii and Habenaria gibsonii var. foetida are distinct. Habenaria digitata is obviously a separate thing. The plant here is one of the varieties of Habenaria gibsonii. If it smells good then its Habenaria gibsonii var. gibsonii and if it smells bad then it should be Habenaria gibsonii var. foetida. If i had to guess this plant should be Habenaria gibsonii var foetida owing to the slightly longer upper segment of the petal. Second thing is the smell which I can find out from here. Here is the link to a perfect flower of Habenaria foliosa All the names according to KEW. I have no much more idea about the species because I don’t see the live specimen till now. I know this species only from literature. There are mistakes on Kew list, so dont worry.
