Maianthemum purpureum ABJUL01/06 : 5 posts by 3 authors. 3 images.
I have never before looked closely at these mayflowers which are beginning to flower in good numbers here. Looking at the flowers today was a pleasant surprise when I found a horned but cute pink/green devil staring back at me (another one for the fantasy stories, ...).  Please correct me if I am misidentifying it.

A very good find ...
I think this should be Malaxis acuminata...a terrestrial orchid!!
Let the experts have their say..
I had a feeling that I was completely mistaken and how correct it was. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. It most certainly matches Malaxis acuminataMy first wild orchid then.
An introduction to this species;

yes. it looked like orchid flower picture. then i rolled down and saw ... answer.
voila.  the visual impression was on the right tract..
I photographed some plants of this Crepidium acuminata (syn: Malaxis acuminata) to share with you.

Yes Crepidium acuminatum.
Thanks a lot for sharing.
I imagine why the name of this thread in Maianthemum purpureum?
Where did this name come from?
This is because I had originally misidentified the orchid as the mayflower and the name stuck on as the thread subject remained the same.
I am not sure if the subject line of the same thread can be changed without losing the different discussions in the thread.
I think only better option is to start a new thread in such cases.

Crepidium acuminatum
Syn. Microstylis wallichii, Malaxis acuminata
Hindi: Jivak

This does look like Crepidium acuminatum (=Malaxis acuminata) but do you have any more pics to share.
Yes, ... Attaching one more photograph. Attachments (1)
Please check the image attached. 2 images.
The plant on left hand side is (B) Crepidium purpureum and one on the right hand side is (C) Crepidium acuminatum. You can see the difference in the midlobe of the labellum (the apex on upper part), there is constriction on left flower making a prominent midlobe but no constriction on right hand side.
Hope this helps in checking your plant.
Thank you ... for these beautiful comparative photographs. C. purpureum is new for me.
I could not reply to your mail earlier, as I was busy with my office and personal assignments.
Attaching more photographs. These clearly indicate that it is Crepidium acuminatum. Crepidium purpureum has never been reported from Shimla hills. Attachments (3)

Yes these are Crepidium acuminatum (Malaxis acuminata). Thanks a lot for sharing. Its strange but it seems that they are flowering very late. They usually dont stay till August.
This is very strange, in fact at once I thought this is a hybrid of Crepidium acuminatum and purpureum but I think this is merely a deformed flower of Crepidium acuminatum.

This one was again a find of our recent tour to Chakrata, Uttrakhand .. Malaxis acuminata
Yes sir this is a typical Malaxis acuminata. His brother Malaxis purpurea is also found around but is more rare and has lobes on the top of labellum. Please see that the flower is not inverted here which is not a typical case in Orchids.
Thanks, ...,

Very good pics in natural habitat. And perfectly rounded lip on sides, clearly visible.
There seems changes in Malaxis genus. Some species in Crepidium, some in Dienia and some in Malaxis now.
This is the great advantage of your expertise that we are able to follow these changes which otherwise percolate very late in Indian floristic literature.
Yes they broke up Malaxis into many tiny groups by people sitting in Poland. I dislike it, but for the time being I have to follow :(

This Malaxis species was seen near Himalayan Botanic Garden Naini Tal (1900m) in oak forest floor.
To me it looks M.acuminata D.Don (Orchidaceae) which have variable lip shape.
Please suggest correct ID.
Yes this is Malaxis acuminata now called as Crepidium acuminatum.
Thank you ... for ID and correct current name.
