its  a wonder such beauty survives in such harsh rocky (almost no soil but the fallen leaf and some mosss may be) foothold.
Very simple....THEY STAY ALIVE ON RESERVED FOOD MATERIAL (in this case the reserved food material is in the swollen stem).
But orchids do die in harsh conditions. Its like survival of the fittest.
You can imagine, one fruit of an orchid can have 1000s and 1000s of seeds, but you dont get to see so many plants or seedlings around.... the answer is more than 80% of them dont survive !!
the seeds did not have the reserved food ... the sprout had to develop and grow and yet be able to accumulate the reserve
that's what's so amazing

in a few orchids grown as houseplants I have never yet seen a pod develop must be very rare
i have even tried hand pollinating but no... seed pods
may be wrong technique, timing, etc
Seeds sprout and develop initially with the help of fungal mycorrhiza. Without fungus they may not even be able to sprout. Then they gradually prepare their reserved food.
So this makes orchids very sensitive. If they cant get fungi then they die, if they cant prepare their food, then they die...
Some or many of hybrids are sterile. They produce flowers but no fruits.
Some do produce fruits, just use trial and error, take pollen from another plant and not from same plant (incase the hybrid is self sterile).

self sterility must be remembered from now
