- This is Aerides odorata Lour., Fl. Cochinch.: 525 (1790). 

In the second collage, three images of individual flower were selected and a composition was made. To me the arrangement looks like a canvas on which Ganapati is arranged.

as the new forest rights act is been implemented in India which gives right to the tribal over their land which they have been cultivating since last three generations and also over the forest patch for collection of non timber forest produce, this has resulted in loss of some very old trees form the wild life sanctuaries resulting loss of habitat for many orchids. In one such case i have counted 12 species of orchids in a single mango tree which was in one of the tribal land in Orissa (Karlapat wildllife sanctuary, south Orissa). Finally the tree is been girdled by the land owner after getting right over it. There are 4 such trees over his land and almost all are girdled now. I am sending some of the images that i have taken during the field visit. The situation now become worse in many parts of Orissa. I think now the time has come we should initiate a discussion at policy level to create a new act (TREE ACT) for conservation of habitat (not only for orchids but also for several other plants and animals) and request all the members to have a though on it. I am drafting some thing for my state for the government of Orissa and will share you soon for your feed back.

- Such activities occur in Chhotanagpur also where they girdle these trees and once it dries off, it becomes eligible to be cut down!! There are three orchids here, Aerides odorata (white flower), Rhynchostylis retusa (red) and Vanda tessellata (brown).

- I thought this is only happening in Orissa.
After hearing this i presume the situation would be same in other parts of the country also. So its very essential that we should advocate for tree act. I wl share it with you once i draft it.

- It also happened in West Bengal,   old trees esp peepul, mangoes, kadam , shirish  ...among others used to have hundreds of orchids along the "roads" from Calcutta down south to Canning or Joynagar etc... most of these trees have been cut down... for clearing for apartments, cash/money, cooking wood,  timber for furniture....  as children we would gawk at the colors on otherwise stark black of the old tree trunks as the car ambled along the old potfilled roads.... along with the orchids, trees (hence green cover )  and the water bodies ( that acted as natural flood control devices) are gone...

   I think we woke up too late... (we means you , me, us, our politicians and businessmen)
   I recently spotted a family of Dendrobium pierardii, a beautiful jewel toned pink orchid on an old kadam tree in a private garden... wonderful to behold and stopped me in my tracks and stoppedpeech for a while...
