Kas Week: Epiphyte turned into lithophyte: Aerides maculosum an epiphytic orchid that is seen growing and flowering on rocks on a plateau which is devoid of trees. The location suggestive of the micro habitat/climate is close to Kumudini lake, a natural lake with fabulous aquatic flora (here showing Nymphoides indicum).
what a nice lake and an orchid anchoring itself on a rock? wonder how do the roots take hold?
same as the lizards do :).
They develop the root cells in the crevices or attach them self to the uneven surfaces. They never produce haustoria, so they stick themselves with the velamen tissue on the rock.
Even on tree trunks Orchids never produce haustoria.
Basic thing is, whether epiphyte or lithophyte, logically both are epiphyte because roots in both cases hang in air and they adsorb nutrition from air and rain. On the other hand terrestrials absorb water and nutrition from soil. Some orchids exclusively grow on rocks or soil but there are some epiphytic that may grow on soil and then there are terrestrials which can grow as epiphytes on trees or rocks. It all depends on the seeds. Once they are out of the fruit they can be blown by air to great distances and can fall anywhere. The toughest part for them is to germinate, for which they need fungal association. Once they have germinated, its rather easy way ahead, unless the climate changes drastically.
Hope this is understandable.

One of the most common epiphytic orchid with big inflorescences observed just before monsoons. I have observed this in Mulshi, Amboli Mahabaleshwar too.

Aerides crispa Lindl.
Dear friends and ..., this post is in context of Aerides maculosa VS Aerides crispa. I am not fully comfortable with my ID of A. crispa. Earlier had labelled this sighting as A. maculosa owing to hint of fine dots on petals. You may validate the ID; and if the aspects seen are not sufficient, I would rather label it as just Aerides sp.
along Tamhini Ghat on 13 JUN 09
Too good ...
This is Aerides maculosa. Will send my photographs of A.crispa & A.maculosa for comparison later.
Thank you very very much ... for validating the ID.
Will correct my notes at flickr very soon.
This looks like Aerides maculosa from the spur.

Yes finally the spurred pic. This is indeed Aerides maculosa. Thanks for sharing.
Members please note the orientation of spur which is going backwards then downwards.

Aerides maculosa, one of the common epiphytic orchids in Chhattisgarh forests.

If ... says this is maculosa then this is maculosa....
Because you are all appreciating the shot, I have doubt now. Possibly this photo was taken by ..., and I collected & held the plant for the picture :(
Spur pointing backwards, then this should be Aerides maculosa.

This is really nice. Not a real alba form but kind of just a form with less pink.
To be an alba form, it has to be pure white.

Orchidaceae Fortnight: Aerides maculosa from Dombivli : MN-2 : Attachments (3). 6 posts by 6 authors.
Aerides maculosa growing in our balcony.
Place : Dombivli
Date :  June 2011
I am always confused with maculosa and crispa :(
Now ... will confirm what this is!!
The same confusion with me too. I will try to find the earlier discussion about it. Probably it relates with the spur length
This should be Aerides maculosa as per the spur which is not appressed on the lower surface f the labellum.
