Malvaviscus arboreus var. arboreus :: Hooghly, West Bengal:
(6 pictures) My mom have a penchant for china-roses. Though the images i attach here do not come from the Hibiscus genus, yet we call it JOBA in Bengali. Usually JOBA refers to various Hibiscus species. These are from our own home-yard and I took the pictures in January, this year and today.
... identified this plant in facebook group - http://www.facebook.com/groups/indianflora/312077798833566/
excellent specially 1st and 2nd shots
Thank you once again. My camera often fails to focus lightly coloured object, specially in low light. Rest of the photos were taken this afternoon when there wasn't ample light.

:
The sunbirds seem to love the nectar from this species of Hibuscus flower. The red petals from a short whorl with a long style. Can anyone help to put a name to this flower? Thanks.

Though cannot be sure, but to me this appears like Malaviscus arboreus.. beautiful bird indeed
Thank you so much for your prompt ID help. I checked out the net and yes the flower is indeed Malaviscus arboreus. In Bengali, it is called 'lonka (chillie) jawba'!

Syn: Malvaviscus drummondii Torr. & A. Gray
Common names: Drummond's wax-mallow, Texas mallow, Turk's cap
This shrub is very distinct in broader leaves, often lobed, leaves lighter green and densely hairy, and smaller flowers mostly 2.5-3 cm long.

Attached are pictures of of some red flowers captured in a garden in Mumbai.
Was told it is Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii.
Requested to please validate the ID
id is correct but Malvaviscus arboreus var. drummondii  is now accepted name as Malvaviscus drummondii Torr.& A. Gray.
For me the ID is correct. However, I wish to know what is the reason for variation in the leaves shape in the photograph 2 when compared to photograph 1.
Location: Bangkok, Thailand
Date: 22 August 2012
Altitude: 40 ft.

There has been lot of confusion between Malvaviscus arboreus var. arboreus (Cultivated) and this variety.
After critical analysis, I have to take all postings from India (including like those of yours) as Malvaviscus arboreus var. arboreus (Cultivated)
