Honey Suckle Mistletoe • Hindi: बंदा Banda, बंदा पाठा Banda Patha • Marathi: वंदा Vanda, बंदगुल Bandgul • Tamil: புல்லுரீ Pulluri, புல்லுருவீ Pulluruvi, உசீ Uchi • Malayalam: Ittikkanni • Telugu: జిద్దూ Jiddu, యెలింగా Yelinga • Kannada: ಮದುಕ Maduk, Badanike • Konkani: Bemdram • Gujarati: વંદો Vando • Sanskrit: Vrksadani;

It is a stem parasitic plant. Plants come under the family Loranthaceae (mistletoe family) are hemi-parasites. They take food from the host trees by means of penetrating roots called the haustoria. They take non-synthesized food, minerals and water as well hence they possess green leaves
The seed dispersal is by birds, mainly Flowerpeckers. The seeds in the bird fecal matter get attached to the branches with the help of non digestive gummy mucilage around the seed. Thus it get attached to the branch and germinate in the bark.
This plant with red flowers used to be called D. falcata var coccinea and the plant with greenish white flowers used to be called D. falcata var falcata.

HELP REQUIRED - DENDROPHTHOE FALCATA: I want to grow the following plant without mango tree, on soil. it is required for my butterfly garden. i don't have a mango tree at my garden, then how to grow the same on the soil ?
help me to prepare required soil for it ? can it be grown on guava tree?
DENDROPHTHOE FALCATA (L. f.) Ett. Loranthus falcatus L.f.,  Loranthus longiflours Desr.Family: Loranthaceae
Bengali/vernacular name: Bara Manda, Bandha, Pharulla.
Tribal name: Porsal (Chakma), Alikhowng (Khumi)
Another best host tree for this species is Melia azedarach, you can try with this.

The plant is a partial parasite and can not be grown in soil. It can not grow on even a guava tree because it needs cracked bark to hold and penetrate in to the rind. It can be made to grow on Bottle Brush, Cork Tree, Parijatak, Acacias and many other trees. Give an account of all the trees in your garden to choose a suitable one. You can just pick ripe berries from under the Dendrophthoe plant and purge them to attach the sticky seed on to the bark. You can also collect such seeds ejected by the Flowerpeckers from their favourite perches. Wish you good luck.
As ... mentioned, we cant grow this species in soil as this is a hemi-parasite.
The seed dispersal is by birds, mainly Flowerpeckers. The seeds in the bird fecal matter get attached to the branches with the help of non digestive gummy mucilage around the seed. Thus it get attached to the branch and germinate in the bark. I doubt whether it even germinate in soil.
So far, I haven't seen any hemi-parasite growing or germinating in soil.
I have seen then growing on a wide range of host trees including Jack fruit tree. .
Agree with .. & .... Dendrophthoe falcata is a Partial Parasite.
Sending a few of my photographs. At my farm have it growing on Mohua, Caesalpinia bonduc [Sagargota], wild Mango and even on Teak.
Have recently posted photographs of it on Bauhinia racemosa [Apta] and they are available at this link :

oh! I have Neem Tree .... hope It will work...
I have LIVE  Lime, Guava, dwarf firebush, Crepe Jasmine, Coffee Rose (Tabernaemontana divaricata) , Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum) , Night- flowering Jasmine (Nyctanthes arbortristis) , karabi (oleander) plants at my garden & Neem in neighborhood ... which will be the most suitable. can they live on dead tree? I have dead betel nut , guava tree also

Book Chapter:
I am very glad to share with you a good news that the canopy research work that I have done in Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Tamil Nadu has been published as a chapter entitled "Mistletoes in the Wet Forest Canopies: Friends or Foes" (Giby Kuriakose, R. Ganesan and M. Soubadra Devi) in "Forest Canopies of South Asia-a glimpse" edited by M Soubadra Devi, T. Ganesh and Amrita Tripathy (2012) published by ATREE, Bangalore.
It is not a highly technical research publication.
Please find attached herewith the cover page and contents of the book.
I thank all of you for the constant support that encourages me a lot for such productive works.
Those who want to buy a copy of the book, please contact Mr.Ramesh at <ramesh@atree.org>. At present it is available at ATREE Bangalore office only.
We were looking at the pollination ecology and the interaction of Dendrophthoe falcata with their host trees that grows in the canopy of KMTR, Tamil Nadu. We located a very different form of D. falcata (I will upload pictures of this little later) that grows only in the canopy of large trees in KMTR and quite interestingly, we foud that they grow only on two species of host trees (Palaquim ellipticum and Ormosia travancorica) that grows more than 15m height. We wanted to check whether they do any harm to the host tree since they are host specific in that habitat and co-exist or not. We didn't look at the medicinal property of the same. But I know that people in Kerala and Tamil Nadu are using some species of the mistletoes as medicinal plant.

Dendrophthoe falcata, flowers and fruits:  Dendrophthoe falcata of the Loranthaceae family,
flowering and fruiting
yesterday at my place in alibaug
Very good set of Pics ... Fruits are looking nice
Fruits have developed nice bright colour, probably for dissemination of seeds by birds. However, flowers seem dull coloured. Here in Pantnagar Uttarakhand flowers are bright red and yellow and bloom in winters, thus attract large numbers of pollinator birds.
i have seen the red ones in pantnagar too. the color is very vibrant. all the ones at my place are white.
but the fruits were startlingly red
In Pune I have seen flowers and fruits same as shown here.

Sharing pictures of flowers of Dendrophthoe falcata at Pune. I always wanted to see how the flowers look but so far have seen this plant very high up on trees like Silver oak and Neem and so was never possible. Yesterday I spotted this at a lower level and was very happy to see this flower
Yes the flowers are very cute. Near Nagpur I have observed red coloured flowers but in and around Pune the colour is greenish white in all specimens observed by me.

Loranthus? Hooghly 16-12-12 sk3:  I found these flowers under a very big tree (60 ft), thought these fell from that tree, but as i searched the net i found these are something like Loranthus longiflorus Desr.
Species : Loranthus longiflorus Desr.?
H & H : not sure about the habit or habitat
Date : 15/12/12, 2.15 p.m.
Place : Hooghly
This could be Dendrophthoe falcata. Some of my photographs of this for comparison are available at these links

This is surely Dendrophthoe falcata, leaves match with your post -  and flowers with efi thread.
But it is much more interesting to know about spines on Bauhinia - efi thread! Is it because of this parasite?
Negative to your question. Discovered the spines on Apta much before the ant's nest. Sending a photograph recorded today.
Beautiful thick-billed flowerpecker ..., we too have this bird, and i have a video of a few seconds, much bad quality.

Loranthus (Dendrophthoe) Hooghly 20-12-12 sk1 Found this plant yesterday.
Species : UNKNOWN
H & H : found growing on Ficus religiosa L., in village outskirts
Date : 19/12/12
Place : Hooghly
Is it a parasitic plant? Like Mistletoe not sure
Experts can confirm.
Yes it does appear to be Dendropthe falcata. A parasite.
A college text book, "Plant Groups", informs plants of the family Loranthaceae are hemi-parasites. It also informs plants are with "sympodial" stems, except in Viscum which are "dichasial".
I have noticed that Dendrophthoe is the current accepted name of Loranthus. "Bengal Plants" describes a number of species :

Yes, for me too its a "Dendrophthoe falcata" and its a accepted name, the old name of this plant was 'Loranthus longiflorus' !! Family-Loranthaceae
This plant with red flowers used to be called D. falcata var coccinea and the plant with greenish white flowers used to be called D. falcata var falcata. Presently these 2 different looking plants are merged as single D. falcata.
