According to Janarthanam and Henry (1992) U. purpurascens Graham was validly published on the basis of materials observed in Mahabaleshwar. J. Graham's catalogue in general did not deal with dried specimens in herbariums. In absence of original materials preserved in any of the herbaria, Janarthanam 82941 (MH) collected from the type locality after a lapse of about 150 years is designated as neotype. U. arcuata proved conspecific to U. purpurascens. It is allied to U. albocoerulea differentiated with character of sickle shaped spur of corolla. U. purpurascens Graham is undoubtedly a distinct species and its inclusion under U.graminifolia Vahl by Taylor in 1989 appears to be erroneous.
Although this species is recognized as distinct in Indian literature, it has been included in U. graminifolia by Taylor and appears as such in IPNI and TROPICOS.

The species is found from south China to India. In China, it has been recorded from Yunnan, Fujian, and Guangdong. In India it is found in the northern parts of Western Ghats from Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa. Janarthanam and Henry (1992) have mentioned Gujarat in the in the distribution based on locality Junnar which is erroneous as Junnar is in Maharashtra. None of the other references record the presence of this species in Gujarat.  All the records are from the top or foothills of Western Ghats.
The species grows on wet rocks, soil covered boulders and grassy slopes (Janarthanam and Henry 1992).  It grows on primary or secondary bare rocky areas in the Western Ghats hills. It is dominant on basalt and lateritic rock outcrops and forms ephemeral flush vegetation. Other common habitats are marshes, swamps and stream sides.
In parts of west Maharashtra, Konkan area and in Goa, the species is used for decoration of Pandal at the time of Ganesh festival. However this is a very minor use and very localised. Hence not influencing the species population to any extent (A. Watve pers. obs. 2010).

Suspect that the 'habit = climber' (herb is not a habit attribute). Please confirm habit.
Most likely to be Utricularia reticulata.

White Untricularia sp. for ID : There were few white flowers found in the carpet of Utricularia
purpurascens
at Chalkewadi (near Satara, Maharashtra). Is this a
diffrent species or sub species of morpholigical diffrence ?
Please read Utricularia in subject line instead of Untricularia
This is U.purpurascens  not a different species. The colour is due to lack of pigment which is very common in plant and animal world. Often refered to as albinos.

Yes ..., My mistake! Perhaps my mind got diverted to some other species

Is it Utricularia reticulata?
The scapes in U. reticulata are twining and flowers are bigger than 1 cm. It is distributed in Konkan region. Inspite of reticulation this is U. graminifolia with erect scapes and flowers are smaller than 1 cm. Pls see the attached image of U. reticulata.

QUERY :: Utricularia graminifolia AND purpurascens:  Would like to know whether Utricularia purpurascens is treated as a synonym of U. graminifolia, as put at The Plants List.
Shrikant ji's Flowers of Sahyadri lists both these species separately.
Have been considering Utricularia purpurascens as an endemic of the Western Ghats.
U. graminifolia is found to be distributed widely.
Not all the things on plant list are accurate which is why they have a confidence level for every synonym. These two are very different plants.
Please consider the query resolved; am happy and convinced with ... clarification.
Vidyarthi lage raho. I have to be with my student. ... is correct.
One may prefer to treat U. purpurascens Graham as distinct species both for local (endemic taxon) or other reasons, but there are very few genera which have been revised on world-wide basis, and Utricularia is one such example:
Taylor, P. 1989. The genus Utricularia---A taxonomic monograph. Kew Bull., Addit. Ser. 14: 1–724.
I am no fan of The Plant List, because I have already sent them seven lists of corrections, but one should decide each entry on its merit. One of the big omissions of The Plant List has been that family Onagraceae has been revised in 2007 by World-renowned authors, but The Plant List people (2010 publication) do not know about this very important publication and The List has entries of names published in 1964, but not those published in 2007, although both have P. Raven as common author. The GRIN on the other hand has this incorporated even in February 2009 update.
I find no reason to cling to U. purpurascens Graham, in light of above monograph and the fact 2011 publication of Flora of China also follows it, to treat U. purpurascens Graham as synonm of U. graminifolia.
Many thanks ... for the clarity. Species of Utricularia always confuse me, not really comfortable with the subtle differences among them. Shrikant ji's new edition of Flowers of Sahyadri has taken into consideration the updates at The Plants List; ... yet it has separate entries for these U. purpurascens and U. graminifolia.
Normally, I follow The Plants List; in case of plants endemic to India, I put a query at eFI to know whether we are following the updated treatments. Many thanks once again.

They are not Utricularia graminifolia.
Details in 5864 and 5886 show that they are U. prupurascens (= U. arcuata). Other two could be same but details are not visible.
Thank you ... for the ID...
1. ..., the efi database does not have a page on the species suggested by ..., in efi, both U. pupurascens and U. graminifolia are together on the U. graminifolia page.
2. The plant list considers U. purpurascens as a syn. of U. graminifolia and U. arcuata is a separate entity
3. What should be considered the correct name of this plant - U. purpurascens or U. arcuata
I am a bit confused....
Question is genuine. It is matter of opinion.
P. Taylor considered U. purpurascens as synonym of U. graminifolia and U. arcuata as a distinct entity.
I consider that U. purpurascens and U. arcuata are same and U. graminifolia is different.
You can follow any of it!

I am not sure but this looks like Utricularia graminifolia. The following work may be referred to for confirmation : Janarth. & A.N.Henry, Bladderworts India 57. 1992.
Thanks, ..., for the Id.
I think it matches with Utricularia graminifolia

This is a miniature version of Utricularia arcuata (Synonym of U. purpuracens).
But for the size there are no other differences. I also collected it from Agumbe two years back.
Thank you again sir.

Slightly top angle of the flower would have helped. In all the probability it is Utricularia graminifolia. If additional photographs are there please post.
Thank you very much ... I unfortunately did not click more photographs
what do they eat?

My friend clicked this angle though. Please see if it can help. Attachments (1)
If that green spathulate thing in 3jpg is called "foliar organ" it can be U. praeterita P. Taylor.
Thank you ... I do not know what else to add to what you have said as I wasn't sure what part of the plant was necessary for identification and did not observe (and click) it correctly.
..., it must be the species what ... suggested.
However, what I find in BSI published docs (each species separately in pdf file) -
(i) foliar organ spatulate to obovoid; ... upper lip shallowly emarginate to truncate at apex, lower lip obovate to suborbicular .. rounded or slightly 3-4 lobed at apex = praeterita
(ii) foliar organ 10 x 1.5 cm (would it be mm?) linear to strap shaped; .... upper lip rounded or obtuse at apex, lower lip rounded or retuse at apex = graminifolia
That's why suggested probability of praeterita. But at the same time longer spur is character of graminifolia.
I have never seen any of the two taxa while BSI published docs are based on Janarthanam Ji's work.
