..., Excellent photo. I have seen this tree on Marine Drive, Mumbai (near Oberoi Hotel). Is it the same? Location from Pondichery (Opp. to Secretariat) Feb/March 2011. Calliandra surinamensis - Mimosaceae This is the same photograph.... Barringtonia asiatica [Samudraphal]. I too stand for Barringtonia asiatica of Lecythidaceae family, as ... pointed out. It cant be Calliandra surinamensis as the picture shows a single flower and it has petals. Flower buds are also different. In Calliandra what we see is an inflorescence with several flowers. But it is a nice mimicry! Mimicry in plants? The flower buds are totally different than any Calliandra vars. I go for Barringtonia racemosa. even i think, Barringtonia sp. Looking at the flower it is Barringtonia asiatica. Very common tree in west coast (Bombay). Better to check the characters of the leaves as well as the fruits for confirmation. The fruits are very characteristic for this species - 4 angled :Box Fruit, due to distinct square like diagonals jutting out from the cross section of the fruit An erect medium sized coastal tree; bark pale coloured, smooth. Leaves 20-40 cm, obovate, coriaceous, sessile, crowded at the end of branches. Flowers in terminal erect corymbose racemes 30-50 cm long. Flowers 15 cm wide, strongly fragrant, opening at night and fading before morning. Fruits 10-15 cm long, ovoid, green, 4 angled. Originates from mangroves of south-east asia, planted on sandy shores in the tropics. Best location to watch this beautiful tree is Marine Drive sea front in Mumbai. To enjoy the amazing beauty of these flowers you have got to be there at 10 pm. The flowering season begins now. Excellent picture ... Thanks for sharing. Some Barringtonias are also at Sagar upvan.
