Id Request for attached scanned image. Two of these medium sized trees stand along the pond near the main entrance of Jijamata Udyan. I think it's Freshwater Mangrove (Barringtonia acutangula). There were lots of fruits (raw & ripe), so collected some seeds of this tree. lets hope they germinate. I hope some one collect some more seeds that would be lying there. Infact it would be good idea to collect seeds, ready seedlings/saplings of various trees from this place (Jijamata Udya, Mumbai). I think there is little mix up in the local names shown in both the links. Barringtonia recemosa which grows along the seashore is known as 'Samudra phal / phool', which seems to be appropriate. Barringtonia acutangula grows along the rivers and common name in Marathi is 'Tiwar'. To call it 'Samudra phal' is not correct. The name 'Tiwar' is also used for mangroves. Barringtonia acutangula is a very beautiful tree and flowers are very aromatic. Flowers generally bloom at night and drop down in the morning. It is beautiful site to see fallen pink flowers floating like a pink carpet on the river waters in Konkan. In central Mumbai (Naigaum) there are old avenues of these trees on Devrukhkar Road and nearby roads. Otherwise this tree is quite rare in urban areas. It is a very good idea ..., if you could collect seeds/ seedlings, propagate them and promote them for plantation in urban areas / parks. The Indian Oak is blooming in Chennai now (14.6.10), though not as profusely as last year. Is it Barringtonia racemosa? This plant is also seen in JIjamata Udyan , Mumbai Great collection ... I suppose this is a coastal tree so difficult to grow in other areas. As far as my knowledge goes there is one tree in Pune (Patwardhan baug ..yet not observed by me!) The fruit is spoken of as Samudra-phala and fruit, and is one of the best known domestic remedies. Also called Stream Barringtonia or Itchy Tree (after a catepillar with irritant hairs that sometimes colonises the undersides of the leaves). Barringtonia is a tree 5-8 m tall with rough fissured dark grey bark. Leaves are obovate. Red flowers are produced on pendulous racemes about 20cm long. Four sided fruits are produced periodically throughout the year. Partly deciduous in extended dry periods. This species grows on the banks of freshwater rivers, the edges of freshwater swamps and lagoons and on seasonally flooded lowland plains, commonly on heavy soils. I am advised that this is the species in Vedanthangal Bird-sanctuary 80 kms from Chennai. this is also an underwater Plant and Birds lay eggs. You can see the tree at the main entrance of the Nageshwara Rao Park, Mylapore, Luz Avenue, Chennai. Just after entering the park turn right. You can see this beautiful tree. I understand a few plants are available in Theosophical society campus. But I am not sure.
