DV :: 30MAR11 - 0352 :: fruiting tree at Kodagu Valley Resort: A medium-sized tree (most probably planted, could be wild).
Date/Time : March 30, 2011 at 3.52pm IST
Location Place : at Kodagu Valley Resort, Coorg, Karnataka ... 12.441011,
75.716247
on Google maps <http://goo.gl/maps/HGyT>
Altitude : 3704 ft (above mean sea level)

- I presume this to be a Litsaea sp. Family Lauraceae.  I had seen a similar species (could be the same one) in the wild recently. I will send the photograph later. It was quite common and the trees were full of fruits.
-  It looks like Litsea floribunda
it is lauraceae for sure...
- Yes, it does look like Litsea floribunda, popularly known as 'Nara mamidi' in Telugu. It is a Red Listed medicinal plant. http://www.biotik.org/india/species/l/litsflor/litsflor_09_en.html
- Litsea floribunda 90%
Identified as Litsea wightiana var. tomentosa as per another thread http://groups.google.com/group/indiantreepix/browse_thread/thread/caf93fa1e7f80add?hl=en_IN#
Would you please let me know the altitude at which you have photographed this plant. At lease place name, I shall get the altitude.
I think it is on the way to the dam site! Am I correct?
It is most probably Litsea floribunda to me.
I think the altitude is roughly between 900 and 1000m. Hope this will suffice. I took the photographs since it was full of fruits but did not closely observe the floral features. Next time I will.
It is L. floribunda. The leaf venation is typical. In L. wightiana, the leaf venation is more different.

Litsea sp. Litsea floribunda (Blume) Gamble perhaps.
Thanks for the ID ...
No problem sir. I saw one Litsea floribunda in the same area at the start of the ghat two weeks back. If this is the same spot, then it should be the same species.
Yes ... I found this exactly in the same location, at the start of the Ghat, on the right, just as one starts his descent.

If we go by leaf veins, it looks closer to L. floribunda as per http://www.biotik.org/india/species/l/litsflor/litsflor_en.html rather than L. wightiana as per http://www.biotik.org/india/species/l/litswigh/litswigh_en.html
Also similar posts are identified as Litsea floribunda (Bl.) Gamble in efloraofindia as per images herein.
Pl. confirm.
The leaves and inflorescence best matches with Litsea floribunda (Blume) Gamble. Please see the attachment.
Attachments (1) - ENDEMIC LITSEA LAM. (LAURACEAE) OF INDIA – I.pdf
I have been following the Lauraceae members especially Litsea and Cryptocarya for a long time. It is very difficult to differentiate most of the times. I have examined this and i feel it is Litsea floribunda Gamble. as suggested by ...
Litsea wightiana Hook is having some what smaller, obovate-Obtuse leaves with less number of veins. Obovate- oblong elliptic narrower leaf is only for the L. wightiana var tomentosa and that is an entirely different specimen.  the length of the inflorescence of Litsea wightiana Hook is also smaller and less blooming when compared to L. floribunda
The nature of the lenticels also vary.
I have come across variations within L. floribunda especially in the size of the leaves from lower elevation to higher, get reduced. But the more number of veins, length of the inflorescence, varying and larger size of the eaves strictly acute-acuminate leaf tip differentiate it from Litsea wightiana Hook
Please show us any Cryptocarya if available.
As regards Litsea, please contact ... who has studied South Indian Lauraceae for his Ph. D.
Please find the attached paper for Cryptocarya anamalayana Gamble.
i will be following the posts related to Litsea and Cryptocarya. will post some photographs tomorrow.

Help me to identify this tree. Only one photograph is available.

Date - February 2020

Location- Mankulam, Idukki district, Kerala, Western Ghats

Habitat- Medium elevation evergreen forest

Looks like some litsea

I Think it is Litsea monopetala (Roxb.) Pers .

But, does it have distribution in Kerala??
Thanks, ..., for the id.
I do not think Litsea monopetala has distribution in the area.
I feel it may be close to Litsea floribunda (Bl.) Gamble as per comparative images at Litsea

Ok, thanks. It is very probable.
