-This is Pisa [Actinodaphne gullavara - previously A. augustifolia / A.hookeri]. Someone posted photographs of this a few days ago.

These are fruits of Actinodaphne angustifolia. My query is whether the Common Name is "Pisa "or "Pisa in Leafbuds
Affirmative. This is Pisa [Actinodaphne gullavara]. My photographs of this are available at this link :

: Kindly tell me if both are same species of Actinodaphne
date/time:Jan11
location:Mulshi,Pune
habitat:wild
habit:tree
height: as shown
leaves: some are light others dark
inflorescence:--
fruits:1) buds are noticeable
2) some flowers
other info: first 2 pictures are same plant
next 2 pictures of another plant
Affirmative. Both are Actinodaphne gullavara [Pisa].
The plant list doesn't have any such name as per link:
While IPNI gives this name Actinodaphne gullavara ( Buch.-Ham. ex Nees ) M.R.Almeida Fl. Maharashtra 4A: 251. 2003
4A: 251 2003
Pisa has also been used for Actinodaphne angustifolia Nees in different threads of eFI as per link.
Pl. clarify what should be the correct Bot. name for all these posts so that it can be properly reflected in eFI site.
Most probably Actinodaphne angustifolia of Lauraceae family.
Yes its Actinodaphne gullavara
Commonly known as Pissa (Marathi)
I couldnt find the name Actinodaphne gullavara in any of the reference available with me. Sorry, as am in Kerala I am not accessible to most of the references. Would some one please share me the reference where we can learn about Actinodaphne gullavara
I could find only few records online of which one is from our group itself. It says Actinodaphne gullavara is a synonym of Actinodaphne angustifolia and while checking in "the plant list" I couldn't find Actinodaphne gullavara instead they have mentioned Actinodaphne angustifolia as an accepted name hence I suggested that the plant in the picture might be Actinodaphne angustifolia.
May be we should discuss with people who is working with "the plant list".
Looks very interesting. There were two collections of Wallich under the same name
Tetranthera angustifolia Wall. -- Numer. List [Wallich] n. 2537
Tetranthera angustifolia Wall. -- Numer. List [Wallich] n. 2559.
Incidently Flora of British India treats them under two different genera
Tetranthera angustifolia Wall. -- Numer. List [Wallich] n. 2537 is described in FBI as FBI treats as Litsea angustifolia Hook.f. -- Fl. Brit. India [J. D. Hooker] 5: 169 [Litsaea]. 1886 [Aug 1886] Branches slender, leaves 7-20 cm long, alternate, petiole 6-8 mm, nerves many, slender; umbel 6-flowered, flowers glabrous; Chittagong, Manipur
Tetranthera angustifolia Wall. -- Numer. List [Wallich] n. 2559. is treated in FBI as Actinodaphne angustifolia Nees.,Pl. Asiat. Rar. 3: 34 1832. This also includes as synonym Laurus gullavara Buch.-Ham. ex Nees on which combination Actinodaphne gullavara ( Buch.-Ham. ex Nees ) M.R.Almeida Fl. Maharashtra 4A: 251. 2003 was proposed. As per FBI Evergreen tree. Branches robust. Leaves whorled, 12-30 cm long, shining above, tomentose beneath; nerves 6-10 pairs, petiole 8-20 mm; clusters silky villous, 6 mm diam; fruit globose, 8 mm diam. on 4 mm diam perianth cup, pedicel as long. Assam, Silhet, Chittagong.
It appears both species are quite distinct, otherwise they may not have been put under the different genera. I am not familiar with these genera but apparently with the two species having gone under same genus Actinodaphne and only single epithet being available, a new combination was proposed in Flora of Maharastra. The Plant List does not appear to be aware of this combination and left the name as unresolved, also suggesting that two may be same. Interestingly former has alternate leaves and latter whorled leaves among other things. Perhaps ... can verify from brief descriptions above.
Perhaps more information can be built up on the basis of above information by me.

identification of Actinodaphne angustifolia:
I am posting the photo of the same tree as last year which was ID'd as Actinodaphne angustifolia. Here is the old link
.
Also some young saplings around. My observation is that their are both light green leaves as well dark green on the same plant>Experts now your call.
Could this be Actinodaphne hookeri ..., will u pl tell me the location.
I had spotted similar plant at the base of Korigad fort (Lonavala region) as well as in Matheran Hills.
I suppose A. angustifolia and A. hookeri are syn. What is the difference observed?
Affirmative. This is Actinodaphne gullavara. Have had a previous discussion on this and it is available at this link

Interesting!  I couldn't find Actinodaphne gullavara in both "the plant list" or "GRIN"
There are 3 different Actinodaphne angustifolia listed in the plant list @ http://www.theplantlist.org/tpl/search?q=actinodaphne
First one is Actinodaphne angustifolia Nees is an accepted name with Laurus gullavara Buch.-Ham. ex Nees as a synonym ( but not A. gullavara).
Second one is Actinodaphne angustifolia Benth. listed here as illegitimate and unresolved
The third one is Actinodaphne angustifolia Hook.f. & Thomson ex Meisn. as a synonym of Actinodaphne hookeri Meisn.
Further, in GRIN A. hookeri is listed as a synonym of A. angustifolia.
Now it is getting confused.
I feel that the leaves of the plant in this thread and the pictures in the link provided by ... looks little different.
Unless we handle the specimen it would be hard to conclude, I think.
Thanks for your feedback. Have quoted from Dr.Almeida's 'Flora of Maharashtra' Vol 4-A. Actinodaphne gullavara [syn. A. augustifolia, syn. A.hookeri] is the only species of Actinodaphne found in Maharashtra.
This is yet another case where The Plant List seemed to have bungled, recently I sent them a list of more than 80 species described in FBI, reported in IPNI and missing from the Plant List.
The name mentioned by ... was published as Actinodaphne gullavara ( Buch.-Ham. ex Nees ) M.R.Almeida Fl. Maharashtra 4A: 251. 2003 and duly recorded in IPNI
Now the important question, is whether above is the correct name or Actinodaphne angustifolia Actinodaphne angustifolia (Blume) Nees -- Pl. Asiat. Rar. (Wallich). 3: 31. 1832 [15 Jan 1832] based on Litsea angustifolia Blume Bijdr. Fl. Ned. Ind. 11: 566. 1826 [24 Jan 1826].
Flora of British India clearly excludes Blume's synonym from the name and Indian plant is as given in IPNI Actinodaphne angustifolia Hook.f. & Thomson ex Meisn. -- Prodr. (DC.) 15(1): 218. 1864 [May 1864]. with Laurus gullavara Buch.-Ham. as synonym. Since A. angustifolia Hook.f. & T. is a later homonym of A. angustifolia (Blume) Nees, it can't be maintained and Actinodaphne gullavara (Buch.-Ham) M R Almeida should be the accepted name.
I have not gone through Flora Maharastra, and I request Neil ji to check for the justification given in Fl. Maharashtra when this combination was published. This is my analysis of what I could explore.
Not sure what you mean by "justification". Dr.Almeida has clubbed all the aforementioned names under A.gullavara and as usual has included a description of the tree and its distribution.
Interestingly further The Plant List treats Actinodaphne angustifolia Hook.f. & T. as synonym of a distinct species A. hookeri Meissn. (Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu species) where as GRIN treats A. hookeri as synonym of A. angustifolia (Blume) Nees).
There seems to be more confusion than can be understood. Whereas IPNI considers Litsea angustifolia Blume to be basionym for Actinodaphne angustifolia (Blume) Nees, The Plant List considers former as synonym of Tetranthera angustifolia (Blume) Nees (not listed in IPNI and genus merged with Litsea in both Flora of China and Flora of Pakistan).
We seem to have three choices to decide from
1. Treat all NE Indian plants (Petarichawa in Assam; Nalingyo in Burma) and Western Ghats and Tamil Nadu plants (Pisa, Pichli in Mar.; Tali in Tam; Malavirinji in Mal.) as single species Actinodaphne angustifolia as per GRIN and "Useful Plants of India. (Actinodaphne gullavara can't sustain as its basionym Laurus gullavara Buch-Ham ex Nees (1831) is later than Litsea angustifolia Blume (1826), basionym for Actinodaphne angustifolia (Blume) Nees.
2. Treat NE Indian plants (Petarichawa in Assam; Nalingyo in Burma) as Actinodaphne angustifolia (Blume) Nees, and Western Ghats and Tamil Nadu plants (Pisa, Pichli in Mar.; Tali in Tam; Malavirinji in Mal.) as Actinodaphne hookeri Meissn. (as per The Plant List, FBI and Brandis). In this case I wonder how NE Indian Laurus gullavara Buch-Ham.) from Goalpara (Assam) could be a basionym for a Western Ghats name Actinodaphne gullavara (Buch-Ham) Almeida
3. It seems best to treat confused names as three different taxa as done by FBI, Brandis Indian Trees and The Plant List
a. Actinodaphne hookeri Meisn. (1864). a species of Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu, locally known as Pissa, pichli (Mar.), Malavirimji (Mal.), Thali (Tam.). Bracts imbricating, not whorled, branches rusty-tomentose, leaves ovate-lanceolate to elliptic, 12-18 cm long, tomentose beneath when mature; female clusters sessile; fruit seated on campanulate entire perianth tube.
b. Actinodaphne angustifolia Nees (1832) (excl Litsea angustifolia Bl.) a NE Indian plants (Petarichawa in Assam; Nalingyo in Burma).
Bracts imbricating not whorled, branches softly tomentose, leaves lanceolate, 20-30 cm long, hairy beneath; female clusters shortly stalked; fruit seated on cup-shaped entire perianth tube.
c. Tetranthera angustifolia (Blume) Nees (syn: Litsea angustifolia Blume).. Again NE Indian species (Assam, Silhet, Chittogong) with bracts in whorls; young branches finely pubescent; leaves linear-lanceolate, 10-20 cm long; female flowers not described, male on slender peduncles.
Flora of Maharashtra (BSI) mentions A. hookeri Meissn. as syn of A.angustifolia Nees. T. Cooke in Flora of Bombay Presidency mentions A. angustifolia Nees, A. lanceolata Dalz. & Gibs. and Tetranthera lanceofolia Grah. as syn of A. hookeri Meissn. BSI flora gives 'Leaves penninerved and in 2 whorls of 3 each'. Young leaves are bound to be of different green than the old leaves. I do not see any difference in leaves to lead to any other species. Validity of name is another issue. I would like to know the specific difference in leaves as seen by anyone.
