This looks like the one in FoI.
Species : UNKNOWN

Date : 20-01-13
Place : Bandipur (Hooghly)
Salvia splendens Sellow ex Roem. & Schult. (Lamiaceae)
When I saw your post I started thinking about it Obviously as Scarlet sage.
Two species are called as that.
Then I searched
Salvia splendens vs. salvia coccinea in Google.
Link describes the difference
The leaf shape
Lance like in S. splendens
Triangular in S. coccinea
The above pictures go in favour of S.coccinea.
Will wait for others to comment
I think it is S. splendens, the flowers are smaller in S. cocinea
S. splendens: leaves 5-9 cm long, ovate, acuminate, flowers 4-5 cm long
S. coccinea: leaves 2.5-5 cm long; acute, trianglar-ovate, flowers 2-2.5 cm long.
Here is my upload from Delhi of S. coccinea

Thank you all for this discussion, now i come to know that there are two similar looking plants from the same genus.
The height of this plant is about 3 ft, like that of S. coccinea as per ... link
But, i think, the leaf size, apex and flower size conform to keys provided by ...
This is surely Salvia splendens.
coccinea is very different.
One may not even be able to differentiate because hybrids of splendens are also available
Digging into Salvia gives more confusing data -
I think this plant is Salvia splendens Ker Gawler of FoC, well, after this elaborate discussion of-course!
Thanks for digging more dear ...,
But Salvia splendens Ker Gawler is a superfluous/illegitimate name. Please check for the following link from Tropicos
The accepted name for your plant should be Salvia splendens Sellow ex Roem. & Schult as maintained by GRIN/The Plant List/Catalogue of Life.
Thank you once again ..., it is Salvia splendens Sellow ex Roem. & Schult., and GRIN also referred to FoC.
A new set recorded today. (19.1.15)
Yes ... had diagnosed it as Salvia splendens then
differential diagnosis was interesting:
your case your case 2013
Gurcharaji's S. cocciniea
I think I ma the first in the group to show this. Attachments (2)

Is this a cultivated type of Salvia splendens?
Bangalore, Lalbagh, 7th April 2014.
It looks pretty much like -
  1. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/164704/
  2. http://www.canadaplants.ca/display.php?id=3306
But, only the photographer can tell us if it ( the uploaded plant in this thread) is cultivated or wild!
Thanks, ..., As per the posting, it is a cultivated plant
It is some cultivated species of Salvia, exotic.

At the outset this is either Salvia or closely related species. I have not gone into details/ further detailed reference..
This should be a hybrid of Salvia splendens.

Can you confirm ?

Why not S.splendens itself.

Although color in not always a criterion, in that case S.splendens is red not violet...

Leaves look different from images of Salvia nemorosa as per
It is Salvia splendens only as suggested by ..., as per images and details herein (purply cultivar).

Salvia coccinea ??

I do not think so.
It is Salvia splendens only. It has many colour variants. It is wrongly mentioned as S. nemorosa at FoI

Attached are pictures of Salvia nemorosa captured at VJTI, Flower Show in February 2013.
Requested to validate the ID.
how does one know without flowers or leaves ?
My mistake ..., I thought all purple coloured were S. nemorosa....
I guess, it is not possible to ID upto species level.
what's showing is just the calyx
not the corolla or the petals
This seems to be Salvia splendens (as per efi pics).
