Time: December 29, 2011 at 1.43pm Habit: herb, about 3 ft high Habitat: cultivated in a spice farm The guide at the spice farm gave the name patchouli - surprisingly was not aware of the scientific name. I'm not a botany expert but can this be Oregano by anty chance? Since you mentioned Spice Plantation, a wild guess. Not oregano, ... Though not familiar with oregano plants, looked up for other names of oregano, to check for patchouli. The plants of oregano look different from the posted one, to me. Patchouli - the true patchouli is Pogostemon cablin (and its varieties), native of Phillippines, Malaysia and cultivated elsewhere. There is false patchouli (inferior to true in terms of the properties of oil) - also known as Java patchouli OR Indian patchouli - Pogostemon heyneanus, native to India, Sri Lanka and s-e Asia; cultivated elsewhere. If the guide's information is incorrect, yet this plant is most likely some species of Pogostemon. Vaze kelkar college from Mulund are doing a lot of work on Patchouli. The extracts are used as base in perfume industry S.H. Kelkar. Will try to get info. Time is great contrin. Let me see. Can the photos be sent to me again? Have missed them. Patchouli, as such is associated with Pogostemon cablin (true patchouli) and P. heyneanus (Indian patchouli). No ruling out your guess ... -- do let me know if any one of P. parviflora OR P. pubescens also share the patchouli name in any way. i never guess plants identity according to local names, as local names keep differing from place to place.. for eg. In Nasik 'Narkya' is Spermiodictyon sp. and Lantana is known by the name 'Gangutai'. If you able to provide the pictures of Leaves and whole plant without zooming the structure, it should become easy to identify the plant, as there are very few species of Pogostemon..
Key characters of Pogostemon heyneanus flower clusters not one sided in the spike, globose, single or in pair floral leaves are present. Additional information: People in different plantations in Kerala cultivated this plant in their plantation and used to use the leaves especially dry leaves against insect pests. This information is from Waynad and the same has been mentioned in Gamble flora as well.

The key character Pogostemon heyneanus flower clusters : not one sided in the spike, globose, single or in pair floral leaves are present. However in the attachments, unless I am misinterpreting, _GIB2769.jpg seems to clearly show the inflorescence facing one side. Similar observation can be made in my attachments too: P1490317_cropped_2, ... P1490320_cropped, ... P1490327_cropped_1 Please consider the inflorescence as a whole, rather than considering part of it. Here you are mentioning only the branches/part of the inflorescence. In the main branch of the inflorescence the clusters cover the whole stem. But, in inflorescence branches, the clusters are not clearly facing one side as that of the real one sided inflorescence but are covering 2/3rd of the stem, I guess. This is why I idied this as P.heyneanus. My pictures are of from same plant and same inflorescence the terminal inflorescence and lateral ones are slightly different in terms of round and one sided clusters. In this regard, the key and the description in Gamble is bit confusing and sometimes difficult to reach a conclusion between P. paniculatus and P. heyneanus. Please find attached herewith the key and description as seen in Gamble flora (sorry for the poor quality as I have taken the pictures using my mobile camera that I am not familiar with). In the description please read the first four lines under P. paniculatus. My misinterpretation ... Standing corrected. My posted plant looks quite similar to the plant you attached for comparison. Thus would my plant be P. heyneanus ? ... OR yet I may be mistaking.

Your similar images of Pogostemon heyneanus Benth. are on FOI (as Pogostemon paniculatus), which I have requested Tabish ji to correct. Pl. see images of Pogostemon paniculatus, which are different.
