Leaves are similar to grasses. No need to confuse with Gagea elegans (syn. of Gagea lutea), which has single leaf per plant, scape is not long hairy, and more importantly ovary is superior. Hypoxis aurea has more than one leaves at base, leaves and scape are long hairy and you can see inferior ovary below the perianth; at a higher altitude (2900 mts) in the month of April... which I had thought to be 'Gagea elegans'.. I have similarlooking in my garden, but will have to wait till april / may next year. Searching in Wikipedia, I could not find Hypoxis aurea listed, although I came across 13 sps of the genus. One of the common names mentioned for the genus was Yellow Star-grass. Flowers are presumably yellow. The name ' grass ' is a misnomer, since the flower is unlike a grass, but lily-like in family hypoxidaceae, sometimes being included in Amaryllidaceae family or the Liliaceae family.
