Scaevola taccada
, also known as Beach Cabbage, Sea Lettuce, Beach Naupaka, Naupaka kahakai (Hawaiian), Magoo (Divehi), Merambong (Malay) and Ngahu (Tongan) is a flowering plant in the family Goodeniaceae found in coastal locations in the tropical areas of the Indo-Pacific. It is a common beach shrub throughout the Arabian Sea, the tropical Indian Ocean and the tropical Islands of the Pacific.
It is a large bush reaching up to about 4 m in height typical of littoral zones where it grows very close to the sea exposed to the salt spray, usually on sandy or pebbly soils.[2] Leaves are slightly succulent, about 20 cm long, closely alternate and crowded at the stem tips. They are glabrous with a fleshy-looking yellowish green color. The fruits and flowers are white. Scaevola taccada blooms the whole year round and the flowers have a fan-like shape which gives them the name Fanflower or Half flower. The fruits float in seawater and are propagated by ocean currents, this bush being one of the pioneer plants in new sandbanks in tropical areas.[3]
Scaevola taccada typically grows directly on the beaches of tropical coasts with a preference for beach crests on coral sands. It grows within in the salt spray area and it is amongst the first pioneer plant colonisers on tropical Atolls and sandbanks. Besides seeds, it is easy propagated from cuttings. It prefers well drained sandy soils and it is a very salt tolerant scrub.
In some islands of the Pacific, Scaevola taccada is used to prevent coastal erosion as well as for landscaping. It is also planted on the beach crests to protect other cultivated plants from the salt spray. Parts of the plant are also used in Polynesian and Asian traditional medicine.[4] It has also been proven to be "an excellent remedy as antidiabetic, antipyretic, antiinflamatory, anticoagulant and as skeletal muscle relaxant without any adverse reactions" by the department of pharmacy of Annamalai University, India [5]

Half- flower: Scaavola taccada
Marath names Bhadraksh, Bhadrak
At Narayan srovar, Gujrat
13 Dec,2011
Minor correction ... It is Scaevola taccada
Very strange but 'Scaevola' means "left handed" and 'taccada' means "Sri Lanka".
Excellent catch ... Never seen such an arrangement in a flower
very nice, I have seen it along the sea coast at Jamnagar to Dwarka in Suarashtra, Gujarat..
does it grow any where else...
the seeds are interesting , white with several grooves, about 1 cm or less in pole to pole size, wrinkles a little, and when dyed brown reminds one of sort of a rudraksha... hence often mixed in with real small rudraksha...
This is planted at BPT Garden (Sagar Upvan), Colaba, Mumbai...on the sea - side....
Yes ... I had also seen at BPT Garden, Colaba Mumbai.
Also, i had seen this plant at Radhanagar beach, Havelok island at Andaman & Nicobar.

The flowers looked like half the flower petals had fallen off... but the flower itself had petals on only one side.
This is the 'Malayan rice paper' [Scaevola taccada, perhaps].
Generally found along coastal areas, also planted in gardens as an ornamental.
it is Scaveola salutaria (Lour) Almeida, was planted in Colaba Coast at Sagar Upwan, Mumbai.
generally found along coast, planted also in gardens and along coast.
As per The Plant List, Scaevola salutaris (Lour.) M.R.Almeida is an unresolved name- This name is unresolved, but some data suggest that it is synonymous with Ochrosia oppositifolia (Lam.) K.Schum.
I could not find much inf. on this except IPNI Link with Scaevola salutaris (Lour.) M.R.Almeida (basionym: Goodeniaceae Cerbera salutaris Lour. Fl. Cochinch. 1: 136. 1790 [Sep 1790] )
WCSP considers Cerbera salutaris Lour. as a syn. of Ochrosia oppositifolia (Lam.) K.Schum. in H.G.A.Engler & K.A.E.Prantl, Nat. Pflanzenfam. 4(2): 156 (1895). without any mention of Scaevola salutaris (Lour.) M.R.Almeida
Hi, ..., Can you provide more information on this ?

Could you help me id our coastal plant please. The sea is the Indian Ocean. Thank you.
Scaevola taccada,
also known as Beach Cabbage, Sea Lettuce
Leaves are edible
Supporting ...
Perhaps ... can help resolve this.
His plant from Java definitely has flowers of Scaevola
His comment on habit of his plant (shrub or tree, height) can help us in deciding this plants.
The plant in question is a large shrub or a small tree, in lakshdweep it is used as hedge plant also. And I have seen it at the water purifying plant and its height was around 14ft. I was told that it grows well in costal areas. I also photographed it, may not be as good.

One name listed is bhadrale at Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission
Would it be ભદ્રાલે OR ભદ્રાળે OR yet else ?
Seems to be a typo in the referenced website. The Gujarati name is also ભદ્રાક્ષ / bhadraksha
This plant is also found in Kachchh.

Small size tree.
Found in a garden in Sriperumbudur near Chennai.
Interesting structure:  Looks like half of the flower petals is missing.
Scaevola taccada (Gaertn.) Roxb. [Goodeniaceae].
