Gentiana pedicellata ABJAN2018/03 : 8 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (10)
Gentiana pedicellata has smaller flowers (7-8mm across), which are usually deeper blue than those of G. argentea and G. capitata. The throat lines are dark blue. Plicae are closer in size to the petals giving a more round appearance to the flower. The plants now are closer to the ground (about 2cm high), much branched and hardly show the stems. Sepals are out-curved, edged in black or dark purple, and reach about half-way up the corolla tube. The basal leaves are longer and fall off early. I am quoting Polunin and Stainton's description to support my identification;
750-3800m. Cultivated areas, shrubberies; common in Nepal on heavily grazed ground.
Jan.–Jun.
A small much-branched annual herb in lax form, with tiny pale blue flowers at the ends of terminal and lateral branches. Flowers 6-8mm long, with shallow triangular lobes with fine points and with lobules a little shorter and broader; calyx about half as long as corolla, with out-curved lobes. Leaves lanceolate 5-10mm, the basal leaves when present much longer and broader; stems branched above, to 8cm but often much shorter.
This description matched our plants closely. Our plants are short and that could either be because of the heavily-grazed slope or the timing of flowering. In better, undisturbed conditions, plants may grow taller. I will keep a lookout for that.
Please correct me if I am wrong. I would also love to hear from Saroj Kasaju ji to know if this plant is in flower in his location in Nepal and whether it has similar characteristics.
Gentiana pedicellata
Near Dal Lake, Dharamshala, HP
1800m approx.
All photos: 29 Dec. to 18 Jan. 2018
The last photo shows it next to G. argentea stem and leaves.
Thanks, ..., for beautiful details and presentation.
Very nice documentation covering major aspects.
Thank you ... for the links. Have you also photographed some in December or January? Or the G. argentea. I am curious if these are coming out early only in our area. Thank you once again for finding the time to reply to my queries.
So far I have not shot in Dec/Jan.
Thank you ... for checking. If you do see gentians flowering on your outdoor trips, please share.

Campanulaceae & Gentianaceae Fortnight:: Gentiana marginata for validation from Chakrata :: NS 02 : 6 posts by 3 authors. Attachments (5).
This one was found abundantly flowering during mid-April in Chakrata, please validate the id..
I hope this one can be Gentiana marginata..as per FOI
This is same as mine from Chopta and Kedarnath (from Indian Flora upload). Have to decide between G. pedicellata (G. quadrifaria) and Gentiana membranulifera T.N.Ho, as G. marginata seems to be an illegitimate name, and alternate name Gentianodes eumarginata proposed in eFl of Pak is synonym of G. membranulifera..
Any one having access to Gentianaceae of India, BSI publication can help, May be ... can help in this direction.
What about Gentiana argentea..??
Please have a look on this.....
In Gentiana argentea plicae are acuminate and lobes longer and long acuminate.
If we look third image in FOI, it is much different than first two and resembling our one. I would go for G. pedicellata the correct identity of Indian G. quadrifaria.
Very beautiful pictures of these flowers and all your posts for this Family Fortnight.
You have a vast collection.

Please help me for identification these small tiny flowers clicked near Badrinath at a height of around 9000 ft. in the month of  June 08
It's a Gentiana species- may be Gentiana carinata.
I think close to images at Gentiana pedicellata (D. Don) Griseb.

Family: Gentianaceae
Date: May 2015
Place: Haripurdhar-Nohradhar Road, Sirmaur District, Himachal Pradesh

Habit: Herb
Altitude: around 2000 metres above sea level

Gentiana species in eFloraofindia (with details/ keys from published papers/ regional floras/ FRLHT/ FOI/ Biotik/ efloras/ books etc., where ever available on net)

I think, this is Gentiana pedicellata
Only three species of Gentiana have been reported to occur in Sirmaur district of H.P.
It is nice to know that you have clicked all the three within 4 days of Plant Hunting Tour to Churdhar
It should be Gentiana argentea
Most extensive work on the plants of Sirmaur is "FLORA OF SIRMAUR (HIMACHAL PRADESH" by Kaur and Sharma of Punjabi University Patiala (2004). Attaching snapshots of Gentians spp. from that work which may help in proper identification. Attachments (2)
Thank you very much sir. Doesn't this plant match very well with G. pedicellata as per the key?
..., I am still with my previous comment 'Gentiana pedicellata'.
Yes I have also identified this plant as G. pedicellata.

Campanulaceae & Gentianaceae Week: Gentiana for id...: This one was shot during may 2012 during our recent trip to Chakrata region, was earlier uploaded and identified by ... as G. ornata, I hope the identity is resolved...
Size of flower and altitude of place should help. G. ornata usually occurs above 3300 m alt, and flowers are 25-30 mm long.
Yes Sir altitude was more than 3200 mt but flower size was bit less 15-20 mm
15-20 mm is too small for G. coronata, let us explore other options.

I think Gentiana pedicellata (D. Don) Griseb. as per images herein.

This one is Gentiana pedicellata (D. Don) Wall. ex Griseb., Gentian. 273, 1839; Collett, Fl. Simlensis 324. ....

I don't think G. pedicellata which has long stalks
Looks more like Gentiana ornata
I think Gentiana pedicellata (D. Don) Griseb. only as per images herein.

Gentiana..?? Kalatope Al170311a:  The last Gentiana I had put up was G. depressa.. this one looks almost
the same but I think it might be different since there are more than one flower on it and the leaves seem smaller and greener to me...
Location Kalatope, Chamba dist.
Altitude 2100 mt
Habit herb
Habitat wild
Height 3 inches

Could this be G.pedicellata???? Only a wild guess..!!!
Perhaps this photo should help...
Its not G. pedicellata.. though it looked alike from the top..
welll... then back to square one... G. depressa (according to my FOH) is supposed to have solitary flowers...
so I thought it might be something different... but...
Even I was not comfortable with G. pedicellata which is a delicate and longer plant. I would suggest G. carinata, if flowers are shorter than 1.5 cm.
It does seem so, sir...
G. carinata? I thought it was darker... but of course in this one too the flower shuts itself... if it is in the shadows.

I think Gentiana pedicellata (D. Don) Griseb. only as per images herein.

Gentiana membranulifera T. N. Ho
syn: Gentianodes eumarginata Omer, ; Gentiana marginata (D.Don) Griseb.
Similar in appearance to G. membranulifera but more tufted habit, plicae slightly crenate-toothed at apex, corolla lobes ovate-obovate.
Clicked from near Churdhar on way to Solan, May 24, 2015.
I feel many specimens under G. pedicellata in our database may belong here.

Nice images ... Images of leaves would have been added attraction.
May I request ... to have look.
I feel it is more closer to images at Gentiana pedicellata rather than those at Gentiana membranulifera

It is G.pedicellata not G. membranulifera
